UC Irvine Research Sheds New Light on the True Size of Distant Exoplanets

UC Irvine researchers have found that over 200 known exoplanets may be significantly larger than previously believed due to light contamination in NASA’s TESS satellite data.
By using a custom computer model and Gaia satellite observations, lead author Te Han discovered that neighboring starlight can make planets appear smaller than they are, meaning fewer true Earth-sized planets may exist than previously thought.
Many of these planets may actually be water worlds or gas giants.
The findings could impact how astronomers prioritize future observations and interpret planetary data.
