How Pets Improve Health and Happiness for Older Adults

Pets can significantly enhance the mental, physical, and emotional well-being of older adults, offering companionship, reducing loneliness and stress, promoting exercise, and even slowing cognitive decline.
UCI Health geriatrician Dr. Lisa Gibbs highlights the many health benefits of pet ownership, from lower blood pressure to improved mood and social engagement.
Cats may offer particular advantages in reducing cardiovascular risks and depression.
However, seniors should consider factors like pet size, energy levels, and long-term care plans before adopting.
Ultimately, the right pet can bring joy, purpose, and improved quality of life for aging adults.

IVC Flag Football Goes 11-3 in Debut, Fuels Statewide Growth

Irvine Valley College (IVC) wrapped up a successful inaugural women's flag football season under first-year head coach Sami Logan, finishing 11-3. With support from Athletic Director Keith Shackleford and the athletics staff, the program was built from scratch and quickly became a standout.
Logan praised her players and assistants for their dedication, noting that the team started with just two players and grew into a full, competitive squad—even defeating rival Saddleback four times and beating several four-year schools.
The sport’s rapid growth has led to more community colleges joining for spring 2026, and Shackleford hopes flag football will become a state sport by 2027–2028.

Northwood Baseball Defeats Citrus Hill 1-0, Reaches CIF Semifinals for First Time Since 2004

Northwood High School's baseball team edged out Citrus Hill 1-0 in the CIF Division 5 quarterfinals, thanks to stellar pitching by Paul Grossman and key hits from Joseph Harper and Carter Liu. Grossman, pitching through a finger blister, struck out seven over six shutout innings before reliever Garrett Stevenson closed it out. The game’s only run came in the fourth when Harper doubled and scored on Liu’s single. The win sends top-seeded Northwood (15-15-1) to the semifinals for the first time since 2004, where they’ll face St. Anthony. Northwood is chasing its first-ever CIF baseball title.
