Irvine Considers Housing Project at Oak Creek Golf Course

The Irvine City Council is considering a proposal to redevelop the Oak Creek Golf Club into a new residential village that would include approximately 3,100 housing units, a school, parks, and community amenities.
The site was designated as permanent open space through a 1988 voter-approved measure, leading some residents to argue that any change in land use should be subject to another public vote.
However, city officials, including the city attorney, interpret the measure’s language as allowing the council to amend the designation without voter approval.
The council has approved a preliminary agreement with the Irvine Company, which includes provisions for housing vouchers, new open space in other areas, and financial contributions to the city.
The project remains in the early stages and will undergo further public review, environmental assessments, and future council deliberations.
Irvine City Council Advances Ordinance to Restrict Warehouse Expansion

The City of Irvine has approved an ordinance to strengthen oversight of warehouse development, with final adoption scheduled for June 24.
The new regulations will require warehouse developers to undergo additional permitting processes and comply with design and location standards to ensure compatibility with nearby residential or sensitive areas.
The ordinance also halts warehouse expansion into new planning areas.
Prompted in part by community concerns over a proposed large-scale facility near housing, the measure seeks to balance economic development with the city’s 2045 General Plan goals, which prioritize housing and land-use compatibility.

Daily Reading Helps Kids Stay Ahead—Explore Irvine’s Summer Program

The "summer slide" can cause students to lose academic progress over break, but just 15–30 minutes of daily learning—especially reading—can help them stay on track. The Irvine Public Library’s Summer Reading Program encourages kids with rewards and fun activities to keep learning all summer long.

How to Recognize and Respond to Heat Stroke in Dogs

Dogs can quickly overheat in warm weather, especially since they can't sweat like humans and rely on panting to cool down. Heat stroke occurs when body temperature rises above 106°F and can lead to organ failure or death if untreated.
Key Signs:
Heavy panting, disorientation, sticky or red gums, seizures.
Common Causes:
Hot cars, lack of shade/water, overexertion, flat-faced breeds (e.g., pugs, bulldogs), muzzling.
What to Do:
Cool with lukewarm water (not cold), use wet cloths, fan the dog, and seek immediate vet care.
Tips: Never leave dogs in hot cars and always provide shade and water.

Liam Miksic Named Anteater of the Week After NCAA Javelin Success

UC Irvine senior Liam Miksic was named Sgt. Pepperoni’s Anteater of the Week after placing 12th in javelin at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships with a 70.13m throw. This marked his second-ever 70m throw, narrowly missing his personal best. Miksic earned second-team All-American honors, became a three-time Big West javelin champion (first to win three straight titles since 1989), and finishes his career as UCI’s school record holder—one of only three Anteaters ever to surpass 70 meters under current javelin specs.

We will resume with UCI’s athletic calendar events when the schedule is available for the fall quarter.
IVC Goalkeeper Josh Simonton Commits to University of La Verne

Irvine Valley College sophomore goalkeeper Josh Simonton has committed to NCAA Division III University of La Verne. Over two seasons with the Lasers, Simonton was a consistent starter, recording 44 saves and two shutouts in 2024, and 58 saves with a 1.50 goals-against average in 2023, helping IVC reach the SoCal Regionals that year. Originally from Chino Hills High, he now joins a La Verne program that went 6-12-1 last fall.
