Airport Fire Grows to 23,410 Acres: Evacuations Downgraded in Orange and Riverside Counties
The Airport Fire has burned 23,410 acres and is 5% contained. Evacuation levels have been downgraded in Orange and Riverside Counties, with firefighters reinforcing containment lines.
A flare-up near Trabuco Canyon remains within the perimeter. Crews are working along Santiago Peak and Ortega Highway, with aircraft support helping to slow the fire.
In Orange County, evacuation orders for Robinson Ranch are now voluntary, with residents able to return home.
Riverside County has downgraded evacuation orders for several zones, though warnings remain in place.

Irvine Safety Event for Individuals with Special Needs: Free Registration Now Open
Andy and Aiden Safety Group, in partnership with the Irvine Unified School District and the City of Irvine Disability Services Program, are hosting a safety strategies event focused on supporting individuals with special needs. This event will take place on 9/19/24 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Legacy Education Center. It is free for all Irvine families, but reservations are required. Attendees can scan the QR code on the flyer to secure their spot.

Magnitude 4.7 Earthquake Rocks Malibu, Tremors Felt as Far as Irvine
A magnitude 4.7 earthquake struck Malibu at 7:28 a.m., followed by a 2.8 aftershock and four more aftershocks ranging from 2.7-3.5 within the next hour. Initially reported as a 5.1, the quake's epicenter was five miles north of Malibu, at a depth of seven miles. No injuries or significant damage have been reported. USGS seismologist Lucy Jones noted that Southern California has seen 14 magnitude-4 earthquakes this year, above the annual average of eight, but not yet statistically significant. The tremors were felt as far south as Irvine, with a 5% chance of being a foreshock to a larger event.

John Wayne Airport is showcasing "Subtle Folds," an art exhibition by James Thistlethwaite, from September 10 to December 2. The exhibition features intricate charcoal drawings that capture the delicate details of human form and fabric, highlighted by vibrant yellow accents. Originally from Yorkshire, UK, Thistlethwaite now resides in the U.S. and his work has been displayed in prestigious galleries worldwide. 50 Adorable Cats Rescued in Irvine—Ready for Their Furr-Ever Homes
The Irvine Animal Care Center recently took in over 50 Ragdoll and British Shorthair cats and kittens from an Irvine residence. Five of these cats are now available for adoption, with more becoming available soon. Due to high interest, a lottery system may be used to ensure fair adoptions. The adoption website updates every 15 minutes, and the center is open for visits weekdays from noon to 5 p.m. and weekends from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. (closed on Tuesdays). UC Irvine Women's Soccer Edges Out Pacific 3-2 in Hard-Fought Battle
UC Irvine women's soccer secured a 3-2 win over Pacific, closing out their non-conference schedule. Laila El Behery had a standout night, scoring two goals and assisting on the third. Her 80th-minute goal marked her second career game-winner, bringing her career totals to 11 goals and 25 points. Pacific fought back to level the match twice, but El Behery's late goal sealed the win. UC Irvine held an 11-8 shot advantage and outperformed in corner kicks. The Anteaters now shift focus to Big West play, starting with UC San Diego on September 19 at 7:00 p.m.
Luka Krstic Named Big West Player of the Week After Stellar Water Polo Season Opener
UC Irvine's Luka Krstic was named Big West Player of the Week after leading his team to two victories in their season opener. The junior attacker tallied 11 points, including six goals, five assists, four steals, two field blocks, and a drawn exclusion. Krstic shone in an 18-8 win over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and a strong performance against No. 2 California. He also added key plays in matches against Stanford and Concordia University Irvine. Krstic currently ranks among the Big West leaders in multiple categories.

Portola Girls Tennis Team Eyes CIF Success After Impressive 6-0 Start
Portola High School's girls tennis team, coached by Natasha Schottland, is off to a strong 6-0 start with victories over teams like Corona del Mar and Beckman. The team, featuring standout players Kylie Nguyen, Leanna Roman, Payton Nguyen, and newcomer Imani Shah, is aiming to advance far in the CIF playoffs, hoping to overcome previous first-round exits. They also plan to send strong individuals to the CIF. The Bulldogs are preparing for the Point Loma tournament in San Diego later this month and are excited about their promising season ahead.

Suspected Burglar Arrested in Irvine After Targeting Women’s Apartments
The Irvine Police Department has arrested a 19-year-old man, Trung Thuan Tran, for burglary in the Park West Apartment Community. Since May, detectives have been investigating a series of residential burglaries targeting young women, where the suspect stole undergarments, cash, small items, and credit card information. Tran was identified through a fraudulent credit card purchase and arrested after a search warrant was served at his apartment. He is being held at Orange County Jail and is believed to be connected to other burglaries in the area. If you have information, contact Detective Brian Felling at 949-724-7189.
