How to Keep Your Body Clock on Track for Better Sleep and Health

The body’s circadian rhythm is a 24-hour internal clock that regulates sleep, hormones, and overall health, primarily triggered by morning light and influenced by daily habits. According to UCI Health physician KyoungBin Im, disruptions from nighttime light, irregular schedules, or poor routines can lead to sleep issues and long-term health risks—including metabolic problems and increased cancer risk—while consistent sleep habits and proper light exposure can help keep the body in sync.

Tips for maintaining a healthy circadian rhythm:

  • Get natural sunlight early in the morning to help “start” your body clock

  • Limit exposure to bright lights and screens at night

  • Keep a consistent sleep and wake schedule—even on weekends

  • Maintain regular routines for meals and physical activity

  • Create a sleep-friendly environment (dark, quiet, and cool)

  • Avoid late-night meals that can delay your body’s sleep cycle

When to seek help:

  • Ongoing irregular or delayed sleep patterns

  • Excessive daytime sleepiness or low energy

  • Sleep issues paired with mood changes like anxiety or depression

How to Help Protect Your Pets from Fleas, Ticks, and Mosquitoes in Your Backyard

Parasites like fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes can appear even in a backyard setting, but simple landscaping and maintenance steps can help protect both your home and pets.

Tips:

  • ☀️ Let in sunlight: Keep bushes trimmed, mow regularly, and remove leaf litter to reduce shady, humid areas are where pests thrive.

  • 💧 Avoid excess moisture: Limit overwatering to prevent damp conditions that attract fleas and ticks.

  • 🪨 Add a barrier: Create a 3-foot border of wood chips or gravel to help block parasites from entering the yard.

  • 🌿 Clear overgrowth: Remove tall grass and brush near patios, decks, and areas where pets spend time.

  • 🦌 Limit wildlife: Store woodpiles neatly, place bird feeders away from the home, and consider deer-resistant plants.

  • 🦟 Eliminate standing water: Remove water from containers like pots, bags, or tires to prevent mosquito breeding.

  • 🐾 Seek professional help if needed: Contact pest control services if an infestation is present.
