Jennifer Koh & Paolo Bortolameolli Bring Mendelssohn & Shostakovich to Life at Segerstrom

Koh Plays Mendelssohn – March 20-22, at Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall. Experience GRAMMY® Award-winning violinist Jennifer Koh performing Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto alongside conductor Paolo Bortolameolli, known for his dynamic style. Woodbridge Pickleball Update: Wintermist Park Ruled Out, New Locations Under Review

Pickleball discussions continue in Irvine’s Woodbridge community. At the March 5 meeting, the Board of Directors determined that Wintermist Park is not a suitable location for pickleball courts after reviewing resident input and various factors. They directed staff to develop criteria for evaluating potential sites, which will be reviewed in a future meeting. For questions, contact the Association at [email protected].
Dispose of Sharps Safely: Free Drop-Off & Mail-Back Options Available

If you use needles, lancets, or syringes for health management, proper disposal is essential to prevent injuries and contamination.
Never toss sharps in the trash or recycling bins—use a sealed, puncture-proof container instead.
Dispose of sharps for free at Orange County’s Household Hazardous Waste Collection Centers in Anaheim, Huntington Beach, Irvine, and San Juan Capistrano (Tues-Sat, 9 AM–3 PM).

Rancho San Joaquin’s Everett Lin Places 3rd in Orange County Spelling Bee

Congratulations to Everett Lin from Rancho San Joaquin Middle School for placing 3rd in the Orange County Spelling Bee! Over two days, he advanced to the 8th round, competing against 137 top spellers from public and private schools. The competition, part of the Scripps National Spelling Bee, featured tough words like tommyrot (nonsense), aikido (martial art), and ufology (study of UFOs).

This week, Irvine Rand Natural Landmarks is celebrating the majestic birds of prey that soar over its open spaces, starting with the Red-Tailed Hawk. Recognizable by its sharp eyesight and signature rusty-red tail, this skilled hunter glides high above in search of prey.
Fun facts:
It can spot small animals from over 100 feet away
its screech is often used in movies
it mates for life
it feeds on rodents, reptiles, and even other birds
Keep an eye out—this raptor is often seen soaring over Irvine’s trails!

12 Pets Adopted & 7 Reunited with Owners in Irvine

From March 10–16, a total of 12 pets found new homes, including 6 dogs (Brad, Daisy, Ezra, Fawn, Ivy, and Plumeria), 4 cats (Blanche, Feist, Layla, and Luka), 1 rabbit (Alex), and 1 hamster (Bubbles). UCI Baseball Sweeps CSUN, Extends Conference Win Streak to Five

UC Irvine baseball (14-5, 5-1 Big West) swept CSUN in a three-game road series, winning Sunday’s game 6-2. Ryder Brooks started strong, holding CSUN to one run into the fourth inning, while David Butler and Max Martin closed out the win, with Butler earning his first victory and Martin securing his fourth save. The offense was led by Blake Penso, who went 3-for-4 and hit his second homer of the weekend, alongside Alonso Reyes, who smashed his first UCI home run. Contributions across the lineup, including key RBIs from Chase Call, Anthony Martinez, and Will Bermudez, fueled the win. UCI, now on a five-game conference win streak, will face UC Santa Barbara next in a weekend series starting Friday, March 21.

IVC Soccer Standout Ashley Arribas Continues to Shine, Helps Missouri Valley Reach Top 15

Former Irvine Valley women's soccer standout Ashley Arribas ended her senior season at NAIA Missouri Valley College on a high note, earning the Heart Women's Soccer Player of the Week award in October. She led her team to two key victories, scoring three goals, including a game-winner. Arribas finished the season with 12 goals, 27 points, and three assists, bringing her career total to 45 goals, 11 assists, and 101 points, with 17 game-winners. Missouri Valley College wrapped up the 2024 season ranked in the top 15 of the NAIA Women's Soccer Coaches' Poll and secured its fourth-straight NAIA National Championship appearance, finishing with a 15-4-3 record.

University High Boys' Tennis Team Off to a 10-1 Start After Championship Season

University High School’s boys' tennis team, last year’s CIF, Southern California regional, and state champions, is off to a strong 10-1 start this season. Returning seven of nine players, the team is led by top-ranked sophomore Rishvanth Kusa, with key contributions from Arystarkh Len, JiHyuk Im, and doubles teams Cedric Lichtsteiner/Joe Chan and Langston Walter-Wu/Mimo Alajeely. A talented sophomore group adds depth to the lineup. At the National High School All-American Tournament, Uni reached the final for the 11th time, defeating Seattle Prep, Iolani, and Menlo before falling to Punahou (Hawaii).
