Make Someone’s Day by Becoming an Irvine CHAMPION Volunteer

The City of Irvine is looking for volunteers to join its CHAMPION program, which connects volunteers with older adults through friendly visits and care calls to provide companionship and help reduce isolation. Volunteers receive five weeks of free training covering communication, mild memory loss, healthy boundaries, aging, fall prevention, home safety, and local senior services. Those interested can register for a free volunteer orientation through the City of Irvine.

Stay Cool and Step Safely During Hot Weather

UCI Health burn experts are seeing more hot-surface burns during the heat wave, as pavement, sidewalks, pool decks and playground surfaces can become dangerously hotter than the air. Extra care is recommended for young children, older adults and anyone with reduced sensation.

  • Wear shoes when outdoors.

  • Check hot surfaces before children sit or play.

  • Choose shaded areas whenever possible.

  • Help older adults avoid prolonged contact with hot surfaces.

  • If you have reduced sensation, check your feet after being outdoors.

  • If someone falls on hot pavement, help them off safely and quickly — hotter surfaces and longer contact can lead to deeper burns.

Discover the Sounds of Birds at Bommer Canyon

Bommer Canyon is hosting an accessible birding experience on Saturday, September 5, from 7:30–9:30 a.m., where participants can learn to identify birds by their songs and calls. The beginner-friendly activity is designed for participants of all abilities, including those with visual impairments, and features a leisurely half-mile walk along a maintained dirt trail while learning to recognize bird calls through differences in pitch, tone, and sound patterns. No birding experience is needed, and extra binoculars will be available.

Teens can unwind and get creative at Teen Art Lab: Mindful Coloring on Tuesday, August 25, from 5–6 p.m. at the University Park Library. This week’s activity features relaxing coloring sheets to help ease into the busy school year, with all art supplies provided.
