How to Prevent and Treat Heat Rash This Summer

Hot weather and heavy sweating can sometimes lead to heat rash, a common skin condition that affects both children and adults. Most cases improve with simple home care, but knowing the symptoms and when to seek medical attention can help prevent complications.

  • What causes it: Heat rash happens when sweat ducts become blocked, trapping sweat under the skin. It is more common in hot, humid weather, after heavy exercise, in infants with immature sweat ducts, during prolonged bed rest, or when wearing overly warm clothing.

  • What it looks like: Heat rash usually appears as small red, itchy, or uncomfortable bumps. In adults, it often develops in skin folds or areas where clothing rubs, while infants commonly develop it on the neck, shoulders, chest, armpits, or groin.

  • How to treat it: Cooling the skin is the main treatment. Helpful options include cool compresses or baths, staying in air-conditioned spaces, wearing loose cotton clothing, and using products such as calamine lotion, aloe vera, hydrocortisone cream, oatmeal baths, or antihistamines to help relieve itching and irritation.

  • When to see a doctor: Seek medical care if the rash does not improve, becomes more painful or inflamed, develops pus, causes swollen lymph nodes, fever, or chills, or if there is difficulty breathing.

Pet Safety Tips for Using Scented and Essential Oils

Many people use scented or essential oils to freshen their homes or relax, but these products can pose serious health risks to pets. Here's what pet owners should know to help keep their cats and dogs safe.

  • Cats and dogs are highly sensitive to scented and essential oils, and exposure through skin contact, ingestion, or inhalation can cause serious health problems.

  • Cats are especially vulnerable because they cannot properly break down certain compounds found in many essential oils.

  • Diffusers can also be harmful, particularly in small or poorly ventilated spaces, and strong scents may overwhelm pets' sensitive noses.

  • Safer alternatives include baking soda for odor control, air purifiers, simmering pet-safe herbs like rosemary or sage (avoiding citrus peels, cinnamon, and cloves), or using aromatherapy jewelry away from pets.

  • If using fragrance oils, store them securely, clean spills immediately, keep pets away from diffusers, and wash off any oil that gets on your pet's skin.

  • Signs of oil toxicity include drooling, vomiting, difficulty breathing, lethargy, or pawing at the mouth. Contact your veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center immediately if you suspect exposure.
