Irvine City Council Announces Withdrawal from OCPA in 2025, Implements Cost-Saving Measures for Residents
On December 12, the Irvine City Council unanimously voted to withdraw from the Orange County Power Authority (OCPA) in 2025, citing transparency, financial, and oversight concerns. In the meantime, the City directed changes to its relationship with OCPA. Irvine ratepayers will transition to the Basic Choice electrical plan, saving about 5% monthly, while still having the option to choose a 100% renewable plan. This decision follows public input and concerns over OCPA’s withheld information and potential rate hikes. Discussions about Irvine’s representation on the OCPA Board in 2025 will occur in January.

IUSD Implements Comprehensive Vaping Prevention Education and Resources for Families
IUSD is committed to preventing vaping through education and resources for students and families, emphasizing open conversations starting in elementary school.
Vaping involves inhaling aerosols from e-cigarettes, often containing nicotine or marijuana. Youth may vape due to peer pressure, stress, or exposure to enticing flavors.
Despite restrictions, access to these products persists. Vaping poses risks like lung damage and addiction, with many teens unaware of the toxic substances involved.
IUSD provides age-appropriate prevention education through programs like D.A.R.E. and "You and Me, Together Vape-Free."
Families are encouraged to talk with children using tips like frequent check-ins and setting clear expectations.
Cessation resources include New Lung, Kick It California, Catch My Breath, and Stanford Medicine.
Visit IUSD’s Vaping Resources webpage for more information.
Hope for Hair Loss: How Wigs Are Transforming Lives When Treatments Fail
Hair loss can profoundly impact mental health, and treatment costs, including high-quality wigs priced at over $1,500, can be prohibitive. California Assembly Bill 2668, which sought to mandate insurers to cover up to $750 per wig for specific health conditions, recently stalled. Dr. Michelle S. Min, a UCI Health dermatologist, highlighted the critical role of wigs, especially for patients unresponsive to medication or pediatric cases where treatments are unsuitable. She emphasized the need for affordable wigs, particularly for economically disadvantaged patients. Dr. Min specializes in conditions like cutaneous lupus, scleroderma, and psoriasis at UCI Health Dermatology Services and UC Irvine's School of Medicine.

Feline Festivities: How to Keep Your Cat (and Tree!) Safe This Season
The holidays are here, and for many cats, a decorated tree can seem like the ultimate playground. To ensure your cat stays safe and your tree intact, follow these helpful tips from the Irvine Animal Care Center:
Secure Your Tree: Anchor your tree firmly to prevent it from tipping over during feline adventures.
Choose Cat-Safe Decorations: Place fragile or keepsake ornaments higher up, and use shatterproof decorations on lower branches.
Deter Climbing: Scatter orange or lemon peels near the tree base—cats typically dislike citrus scents.
Cover the Tree Stand: Protect your cat by covering the water stand to prevent them from drinking tree water.
Provide Alternatives: Keep your cat busy with toys, scratching posts, or even a festive cat tree of their own.
A secure and cat-proofed tree will make for a joyful holiday for you and your furry friend! For more pet care tips, visit cityofirvine.org/irvine-animal-care-center/resources.
