UCI Health Introduces Groundbreaking Noninvasive Ultrasound Treatment for Liver Cancer

UCI Health's Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center is the first NCI-designated cancer center in California to introduce histotripsy, a noninvasive ultrasound technology that uses focused sound waves to treat liver cancer. Led by Dr. Nadine Abi-Jaoudeh, the UCI Health team recently treated patients with this FDA-approved system, which liquefies tumors without heat, radiation, or any damage to surrounding healthy cells. This outpatient procedure allows most patients to go home the same day, offering a safer option for those who cannot undergo traditional surgery and potentially enhancing treatment alongside systemic therapies.

Explore Quail Hill Loop: A Scenic Hike Full of Surprises and Seasonal Beauty

The nearly 2-mile Quail Hill Loop offers an easy and scenic hike with diverse seasonal beauty, making it a favorite for trail runners, dog walkers, and casual hikers. A self-guided audio tour reveals fascinating facts about the area, including the presence of fairy shrimp that emerge in springtime vernal pools. Hikers may spot wildlife like birds and butterflies, along with invasive artichoke thistles and native plants like evening primrose. The Loop offers the chance to spot several bird species, including turkey vultures soaring in the sky, and, occasionally, red-tailed hawks. The trail also offers stunning views of Saddleback and Irvine’s natural surroundings, with nearby paths leading to Laguna Coast Wilderness Park for those seeking longer adventures.

Fall Pet Safety 101 from VCA Animal Hospitals: Protect Your Dog from These Seasonal Threats

- Secure trash: Vets frequently see pets ingest foreign objects, especially corn cobs, which can cause dangerous obstructions and require surgery.
- Mushroom caution: During the fall season toxic mushrooms can often be hidden in grass, so monitor your dog closely during walks to prevent accidental ingestion.
- Avoid sharing treats: Fall and winter holiday foods, especially sweets and savory treats, can upset your pet's stomach—avoid sharing human food.
- Antifreeze safety: Keep antifreeze out of reach, and clean up any spills immediately, as it is toxic to pets.
- Halloween precautions: Keep chocolate and candy away from pets, as these can be harmful to their health.
