This comprehensive training equips participants with vital disaster response skills—including emergency preparedness, fire safety, medical aid, and search and rescue—to assist themselves and others in the event of a major emergency. Since its inception in 1999, the program has trained over 3,000 Irvine residents and workers.

For further details, visit the City’s website here.

Irvine and SCE Complete Wildfire Mitigation Project in Bommer Canyon

The City of Irvine, in partnership with Southern California Edison (SCE), completed a multi-year wildfire mitigation project in Bommer Canyon to enhance fire safety and preserve open space. After a 2019 fire caused by a failed powerline crossarm, the City and SCE worked to remove overhead electrical infrastructure. By summer 2023, power lines were installed underground, and the final utility pole was removed last month.

What to Do if You Find a Baby Bird or Duckling in the Wild

Finding a baby bird, fledgling, or duckling can be concerning, but in most cases, it’s best not to interfere. Many wild animals leave their young temporarily while they search for food, and removing them can actually decrease their chances of survival. Here are the key steps to follow:

  • Observe from a distance — the mother may be nearby, watching and waiting for the area to clear.

  • Leave the baby where it was found — this allows the best opportunity for reunification. If a nest is needed, a simple one can be made from a margarine tub or berry basket (instructions can be found online).

  • Step in only if the mother is confirmed to be deceased — in this case, contacting a professional is appropriate.

Irvine Man Arrested After Loaded Firearm Leads to Teen’s Fatal Shooting

On March 27, the Irvine Police Department responded to a tragic incident involving a 13-year-old boy who suffered a fatal, self-inflicted gunshot wound while visiting a residence near Heathergreen and Weepingwood. The victim, accompanied by a friend, was visiting a juvenile resident; an adult female was also present. The firearm involved was found loaded and unsecured on a nightstand in the bedroom of Christian Douglas Yeager, 56, who was not home at the time. During the investigation, multiple unsecured firearms belonging to Yeager were recovered. As a result, Yeager was arrested and charged with criminal storage of a firearm (Penal Code 25100(a)) and child endangerment (Penal Code 273a(a)). The Irvine Police Department continues to work with the Irvine Unified School District to provide support to students and staff at Southlake Middle School. Firearm safety resources and complimentary gun locks are available at the Irvine Police Department Business Desk.
