Keep Your Back Safe With These Exercise Tips From UCI Health

Some popular exercises can put extra stress on your spine, especially when performed with poor form or heavy weights. A UCI Health orthopedic spine surgeon shares safer ways to train while protecting your back.

  • Deadlifts: Heavy deadlifts place significant pressure on the lower back. Keep the weight close to your legs with a neutral spine, or try hip bridges or hip thrusts instead.

  • Squats: Deep squats and heavy weights can strain the spine if your back rounds. Front squats, lighter weights, or shallow squats are safer options, while step-ups and reverse lunges work similar muscles.

  • Running: People with recent spine surgery, chronic back problems, or a family history of certain spinal conditions may benefit from lower-impact activities like swimming, cycling, or using an elliptical.

  • Strengthen your core: Exercises such as planks, bird dogs, dead bugs, and hip bridges help support the spine and improve stability when done a few times each week.

Barn Owls Spotted Hunting After Sunrise at UC San Joaquin Marsh

A family of barn owls has been spotted hunting after sunrise at the UC San Joaquin Marsh Reserve, an unusual sight that may be part of young owls learning to hunt or because California voles—their main prey—are most active in the early morning. The sighting highlights the importance of protected habitats like the marsh, which provide food, shelter, and space for wildlife facing threats such as habitat loss, vehicle collisions, and rodenticides, while also supporting research and education.

What to Know About Professional Dental Cleanings for Pets

Keeping your pet's teeth clean is an important part of their overall health. Annual professional dental cleanings help prevent gum disease, detect hidden dental problems, and keep your dog or cat healthy.

  • 🦷 Veterinarians recommend a professional dental cleaning for dogs and cats about once a year.

  • 🩺 The procedure includes a physical exam, bloodwork, and anesthesia to ensure your pet can safely undergo treatment.

  • 📸 Dental X-rays help detect problems below the gum line that can't be seen during a regular exam.

  • ✨ Teeth are cleaned, polished, measured, and checked for signs of disease.

  • 🦷 If needed, damaged or infected teeth may be removed with the owner's approval.

  • 🏡 Recovery: Most pets go home the same day after recovering from anesthesia, and your veterinarian will provide aftercare instructions to support a smooth recovery.
