Irvine City Council Delays Decision on Major Housing Plan Until August 13
Irvine City Council reviewed a proposed update to the Irvine General Plan on July 23, focusing on constructing thousands of housing units to meet state mandates. The discussion was extended to the next meeting on August 13. The plan, first adopted in 1973 and last significantly updated in 2000, aims to comply with California's housing mandates by February 15, 2025. Irvine needs to build 23,610 new units by October 2029, including over 10,000 low-income units. The 2045 General Plan proposes up to 57,656 new units, concentrating on high-density areas like the Irvine Business Complex. The plan faces three options: approve the maximum units, approve a modified plan, or reject it, with staff recommending the modified plan. Public comments included support and concerns about accessibility and housing for students. If passed, the plan requires overriding a previous decision by the Airport Land Use Commission regarding noise and safety. The final decision will be revisited on August 13.

Slow Down to Save Lives: DA Urges Drivers to Keep Speeds Safe for Pedestrians
In the US, around 70,000 pedestrians are hit by vehicles annually, resulting in many serious and fatal injuries. The risk of severe injury increases with the vehicle's speed: 10% at 16 mph, 25% at 23 mph, 50% at 31 mph, 75% at 39 mph, and 90% at 46 mph. The Orange County District Attorney's Office advises drivers to maintain appropriate speeds to help ensure pedestrian safety, emphasizing that a few extra minutes for drivers could save lives.
UC Irvine's Dr. Petra Wilder-Smith Develops Groundbreaking Oral Cancer Detection Camera
Dr. Petra Wilder-Smith of UC Irvine has developed an innovative camera for early detection of oral cancers, enhancing accuracy from 40%-60% to 87%-93%. Supported by grants since 2008, the device is now patented and being prepared for commercial use. Wilder-Smith, recognized as UCI Beall Applied Innovationโs 2023 Innovator of the Year, continues her mission to improve oral cancer outcomes, a critical focus of her career.
