The 5 Ways We Feed OC: How Second Harvest Sources Millions of Pounds of Food

Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County gathers millions of pounds of fresh, nutritious food each year through five main sourcing methods. These combined efforts ensure schools, shelters, senior centers, after-school programs, and local pantries receive the food they need to support the community.

  • Purchasing: Buying nutritious food in bulk to meet ongoing demand.

  • Acquiring: Receiving large-volume donations from major food manufacturers and distributors.

  • Rescuing Food: Collecting unsold but perfectly good groceries from local stores.

  • Receiving Assistance: Utilizing federal and local government food programs.

  • Growing: Producing fresh fruits and vegetables at Harvest Solutions Farm and Founders Farm.

Stay Safe This Season: UCI Doctor Shares Easy Tips to Prevent Holiday Kitchen Burns

Holiday gatherings often mean more time in the kitchen—and a higher chance of cooking fires and burn injuries. In fact, holiday cooking fires can rise by as much as 400%. UCI Health Burn Center Director Dr. Syed F. Saquib recommends a few easy safety habits to help keep everyone safe.

Safety Tips

  • Ensure smoke detectors are working before cooking.

  • Always keep an adult supervising the stove when it’s on.

  • Maintain a three-foot safety zone around the stove for kids and pets.

  • Remove all flammable items (towels, packaging, paper) from the cooking area.

  • Avoid loose-fitting clothing that could brush against open flames.
