Irvine Startup Makani Science Introduces Innovative Wearable Respiration Monitor Using Shrinky Dinks
Makani Science, an Irvine-based medtech startup, is developing a wearable respiration monitor using Shrinky Dinks, a popular children's toy. The device, a bandage-sized patch, provides continuous monitoring to detect breathing disruptions and transmits data via Bluetooth to the user’s phone. Currently under FDA review, the first-generation device is expected to receive approval by year-end and will cost around $75. Makani has raised $3.5 million and is developing a second-generation version to measure respiratory rate and volume. Co-founded by UC Irvine professor Michelle Khine and her former student Michael Chu, the company is also in talks with Children’s Hospital of Orange County for a study on neonatal care. CEO Greg Buchert, with nearly three decades of healthcare experience, joined Makani after leading due diligence on an investment by TCA Venture Group.

How California’s Sales Tax is Impacting Low-Income Residents and Local Businesses
California has the highest state sales and use tax rate in the country, with combined state and local rates in parts of the Bay Area reaching 10.75%. This regressive tax impacts low-income residents the most, making everyday necessities more expensive. Increasing sales tax further would disproportionately harm vulnerable Californians. Additionally, businesses in manufacturing and R&D face significant tax burdens, with equipment purchases subject to a 1.25% local sales tax plus additional voter-approved taxes. This increases production costs and makes conducting manufacturing and research costly.

Shield Your Skin: Top Sun Safety Tips from UCI Health Dermatologist
Sun protection is essential year-round, regardless of age or weather. Dr. Melissa Shive, a UCI Health dermatologist, emphasizes that scientific evidence supports sunscreen's benefits in preventing skin cancer. Despite myths, especially among young adults, sun damage is a significant concern. A study by the American Academy of Dermatology found that many young adults and millennials underestimate the risks of tanning. Skin cancer, the most common cancer in the U.S., affects one in five Americans. Shive recommends several sun safety tips: apply broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen daily, even on cloudy days, reapply every two hours when outdoors, seek shade, wear protective clothing and hats, use sunglasses to protect your eyes, and monitor skin changes.

Essential Dog Water Safety Tips for a Safe and Fun Summer
To ensure a safe and fun time for your canine companion, follow these key dog water safety dos and don'ts.
Dos: Check with your vet before swimming if your dog has health conditions, introduce your dog to water gradually, fence off and cover your pool, use a canine life jacket, supervise your dog at all times, provide fresh drinking water, and keep your dog’s leptospirosis vaccine up to date.
Don'ts: Don’t assume your dog can swim, let them drink pool or lake water, ignore signs of distress, assume all bodies of water are safe, or forget to have fun. After swimming, rinse your dog, clean their ears, and dry them thoroughly to prevent infections.
