35 High School Girls Gain Medical Insights through UCI's Summer Health Experience

The University of California Irvine's Summer Health Experience (SHE) program is giving 35 high school girls a head start in their medical careers through doctor shadowing and surgery simulations. Selected from over 300 applicants, participants aged 15 to 18 gain hands-on experience at the UCI Medical Center. Founded by Dr. Nimisha Parekh, a gastroenterologist, the 10-year-old program aims to inspire and mentor young women in the medical field. Dr. Parekh finds it rewarding to see the increasing interest and growth of women in medicine, fulfilling her goal of being a role model and mentor to aspiring female medical professionals.
Irvine to Create Its Own Library System, Closing Long-Standing Library

Irvine plans to leave the countywide library system, taking nearly 14% of its funding and over 167,000 catalog items. The city will take control of the Heritage Park and University Park Libraries, with $9 million in annual funding, and create a new department to manage its libraries. The Katie Wheeler Library will close but be replaced along with a new Great Park branch. Despite long-held frustrations over funding disparities, City Manager Oliver Chi views the move as an expansion. In exchange for county support, Irvine forfeits its claim to a $28 million fund. The City Council will finalize the decision soon.

Stay Safe This Summer: Top Tips to Prevent Grill Fires from NFPA

July is the peak month for grill fires, with June, May, and August following closely behind, according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) data from 2017-2021. To ensure a safe barbecue:
Keep children and pets at least three feet away from the grill and never leave it unattended.
For propane grills, avoid overfilling the tank, check for leaks with a soap and water solution, and store it upright away from heat sources.
For charcoal grills, let coals cool completely before disposal and avoid placing hot coals near flammable materials.
Follow these tips for a safe and enjoyable grilling experience. For more information, visit the NFPA website.

UCI Health First in Southern California to Use Advanced Photon-Counting CT Imaging

UCI Health has become the first in Southern California to use advanced photon-counting CT imaging, which provides higher resolution scans in less time.
