Irvine Set to Launch Independent Library System by July 2025 After Unanimous City Council Vote

Irvine could soon have its own library system after the city council unanimously voted to leave the Orange County Public Libraries, pending county supervisors' approval. This decision follows years of disputes over the allocation of taxpayer funds, with Irvine expecting to invest $9 million annually into their libraries, nearly double the current county investment. Plans include opening new branches and expanding services. The Katie Wheeler library will close, and University Park library will relocate within five years. The final vote is expected in August, with the transition set for July 2025.
UC Irvine Chamber Singers Shine as Finalists in 2024 American Prize

The UC Irvine Chamber Singers, led by Dr. Irene Messoloras, have been named a finalist in the 2024 American Prize competition, which recognizes excellence in performing arts nationwide. The ensemble is a finalist in two categories: Choral Performance (college/university division) and the Ernst Bacon Memorial Award for American Music. Additionally, Dr. Messoloras is nominated for her work with The Hour of Power Choir in the community division. Winners will be announced soon. More details can be found at theamericanprize.org.

Beat the Burn: Top Tips to Soothe Sunburn and Stay Safe in the Sun

Your skin is sensitive to ultraviolet (UV) light, and even brief exposure to the sun or tanning beds can cause sunburn. UV rays penetrate clouds, and reflective surfaces like water, sand, and snow can double your exposure. Prolonged exposure can lead to skin cancers such as melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma.
Risk factors for sunburn include pale skin, red hair, outdoor work, a history of sunburn, photosensitizing medications, water activities, living in sunny or high-altitude areas, lack of skin protection, and alcohol consumption.
Symptoms include pink or red skin, pain, blisters, and swelling.
Home treatments include rehydration, moisturizing, oatmeal baths, avoiding more sun, covering up, applying aloe vera, not peeling skin, leaving blisters alone, and taking anti-inflammatories.
Seek medical advice if you experience severe symptoms like large blisters, nausea, muscle cramps, dehydration, or extreme weakness. Visit Woodbridge Walk-In Urgent Care, Fountain Valley Urgent Care, or Costa Mesa Urgent Care in CA for medical assistance.

Join the Effort to Preserve Biodiversity: Help Harvest Native Seeds This Summer

This summer, the team at Irvine Ranch Conservancy is harvesting native seeds to preserve biodiversity and enhance ecological resilience. UC Irvine Women's Soccer Prepares for 2024 Season with High Expectations

As the 2024 women's soccer season begins, UC Irvine's Anteaters are gearing up for another promising year, aiming to build on their recent success. With three consecutive Big West Championships and NCAA Sweet Sixteen appearances, they are among seven programs nationwide to reach this stage in the last two years. Despite key players moving on, a strong, experienced core remains, supplemented by new talent. Major contributors from the previous season, such as Alyssa Moore and Glo Hinojosa, will be missed, but new arrivals like Savanna Arruda and Ashley Naylor are ready to step up. Head Coach Scott Juniper, in his 18th year, alongside a seasoned coaching staff, aims to continue their winning legacy. The 2024 schedule is challenging, featuring games against top teams like Stanford, Washington, and Arizona, with a significant portion of the season spent on the road.
