How Compression Socks May Help Reduce Swelling and Blood Clot Risk in Pregnancy

Pregnancy often causes swelling in the legs and feet, but wearing light, breathable compression socks can help improve blood flow and reduce discomfort.
Dr. Donna Baick, a UCI Health OB-GYN, told Forbes that compression socks may ease conditions like leg edema, cramps, blood clots, and deep vein thrombosis (DVT).
She explains that graduated compression socks—tighter at the ankle and looser going up—are most effective.
Lighter options (15–20 mmHg) are good for mild swelling, while stronger ones (20–30 mmHg) help with varicose veins and more severe swelling.
Baick advises consulting a physician for proper fit and guidance.
