Irvine Police Urge Parents to Monitor Kids’ E-Bike Use Amid Safety Concerns
Irvine PD is urging parents to be cautious when buying bikes for their kids, highlighting concerns about illegal e-motorcycles and unsafe riding behaviors among juveniles.
Many of these bikes, capable of reaching speeds up to 60 MPH, require a driver's license and are illegal on city streets.
There’s been a rise in e-device-related collisions, prompting the need for awareness and safety measures.
To promote safety, juveniles may attend a two-hour bike safety class with their parents instead of paying fines, which can reach up to $500, plus additional towing and storage fees.
Legal e-bikes fall into three categories, with maximum speeds ranging from 20 to 28 mph depending on the class.
