Irvine's Energy Debate Heats Up: Councilmembers' Oversight of OCPA's Practices Sparks Controversy

Irvine Councilmembers Tammy Kim and Kathleen Treseder are criticized for not effectively scrutinizing the Orange County Power Authority (OCPA), which has been accused of misleading the public about its clean energy practices. Despite claims of transparency, the councilmembers seem unaware that power purchase agreements do not reflect the actual energy mix delivered, which includes significant amounts of non-renewable "brown power." OCPA's energy content labels and claims of delivering 95.5% renewable energy are also called into question, as they do not account for the undisclosed use of dirty power and the agency's failure to meet resource adequacy requirements. The lack of third-party verification of OCPA's power content label and the postponement of independent audits until at least 2026 raise further concerns about the authenticity of OCPA's green energy claims. The councilmembers' understanding of OCPA's commitments and their role as fiduciaries is challenged, suggesting they are not fully informed or acting in the best interest of Irvine taxpayers and ratepayers. Residents have the option to opt-out of OCPA's services.

The Leapfrog Group, an independent national watchdog, assigns these grades based on a hospital's ability to prevent errors and harm to patients. UCI Health's accolades also include a five-star hospital rating and top national ranks for both inpatient and outpatient care.
