Irvine Opens New Jeffrey Open Space Trail Bicycle & Pedestrian Bridge

The City of Irvine has officially opened the new Jeffrey Open Space Trail (JOST) Bicycle & Pedestrian Bridge, making it safer and easier for people to walk and bike across Walnut Avenue, the I-5 Freeway, and the Jeffrey Road Park & Ride. The nearly 1,200-foot bridge is the largest of its kind in Irvine and connects several sections of the city's trail system to a larger regional network. The project also extends the trail to Smoke Tree, with plans to continue to Barranca Parkway.

Irvine Educators Receive State and National Arts Education Honors

Sierra Vista Middle School music teacher Henry Miller has received his second Country Music Association (CMA) Music Teacher of Excellence Award, recognizing his contributions to music education. Miller, who has taught in Irvine for 36 years, plans to use the $5,000 award to purchase new musical scores for the school's bands and orchestras. He credits Irvine's longstanding support for arts education, along with district and community partnerships, for helping expand opportunities for students. Several other Irvine educators have also receive achievements, including Erica Turrell, Katherine Findlay, Becca Voight, and Amanda Mailman, who received state and national honors for excellence in music and theater education.

Irvine Considers Expanded Job Protections for Grocery Store Employees

Irvine City Council is considering a new rule that would help grocery store employees keep their jobs if their store is sold to a new owner. The proposal would require eligible new owners to keep current workers for at least 90 days and would expand protections to some smaller grocery stores that are not covered by state law. Supporters say it helps protect workers and keeps experienced employees on the job, while opponents say it could increase costs and make it harder to keep grocery prices affordable.

Small Daily Habits Can Lead to Big Health Improvements

  • Build healthy habits: Small, consistent actions are one of the best ways to improve your health and reach long-term fitness goals.

  • Start small: Simple daily choices, repeated over time, can lead to meaningful and lasting improvements.

  • Replace unhealthy routines: Swap habits that don't support your health with healthier ones that fit into your daily life.

  • Stay consistent: Eating well, exercising regularly, getting enough sleep, and managing stress provide the greatest benefits when practiced consistently.

Late Summer Grooming Tips to Help Dogs and Cats Stay Cool

As the warm weather continues, here are few simple grooming habits that can help keep your dog or cat cool, comfortable, and looking their best.

  • Brush regularly: Brushing removes loose fur, helps pets stay cooler, and keeps their coats healthy. Double-coated dogs may need daily brushing, while long-haired cats benefit from regular grooming to prevent mats and hairballs.

  • Bathe when needed: An occasional cool bath can help remove loose fur and provide relief from the heat. Avoid bathing dogs too often, as it can dry out their skin—every few weeks or about once a month is enough for most.

  • Trim, don't shave: Keeping a dog's coat neatly trimmed can make grooming easier, especially in the fall, but avoid shaving them down to the skin unless your veterinarian recommends it. Their coat helps protect against heat and sunburn.

  • Keep cats comfortable: Most cats groom themselves, but regular brushing and an occasional cool bath for cooperative cats can help reduce shedding and keep them comfortable during warm weather.
