Irvine Opens First-Class IV Protected Bikeway for Safer Cycling

Irvine has enhanced bike safety with its first Class IV Protected Bikeway, a 1.25-mile path along Cadence between Radial and Chinon that separates cyclists from cars using physical barriers.
Open to all ages and electric bikes of all classes, the bikeway improves accessibility.
To maintain cleanliness, the city introduced “Evie,” an electric street sweeper, which reduces carbon emissions equivalent to removing four gas-powered cars.
This addition supports Irvine’s bike-friendly initiatives, adding to its 100+ miles of off-street bikeways and nearly 300 miles of on-street bike lanes.
Recognized by the League of American Bicyclists as the top-ranked city for biking in Orange County, Irvine continues to promote safer, greener transportation.
City of Irvine Launches Property & Community Analytics Dashboard for Business Development

The City of Irvine has introduced the Available Property & Community Analytics Dashboard, a tool designed to assist users in exploring real estate listings for sale and lease. This resource provides data on demographics, labor force, and consumer expenditures, along with custom map layers for zoning and development considerations. The dashboard is intended to support businesses in evaluating potential locations within Irvine. For inquiries regarding land use requirements, the Planning Team can be contacted at [email protected] or 949-724-6308. The dashboard, along with a video tutorial and additional economic development resources, is available at cityofirvine.org/economic-development.

National Burn Awareness Week: How to Prevent and Treat Burns at Home

National Burn Awareness Week (Feb. 2-8) focuses on preventing burns at home. Dr. Syed F. Saquib of UCI Health advises against using home remedies like butter or ice, which can worsen burns.
Burns are classified by severity: first-degree (redness, mild pain), second-degree (blisters, higher infection risk), and third-degree (deep tissue damage, medical emergency).
UCI Health’s Regional Burn Center offers specialized burn care in Orange County.
To prevent burns, use oven mitts, monitor water temperature, and check heating devices.
For minor burns, rinse with cool water, apply antibiotic ointment, and keep wounds moist.
Seek medical help for larger or severe burns.

Nighttime Pollinators: How Bats Keep Yucca Blooming

Bats and native plants like yucca share a mutualistic relationship, benefiting both species. As bats feed on nectar from night-blooming plants (yucca, agave, evening primrose), they transfer pollen, aiding plant reproduction. In return, these plants provide a vital food source for bats. This partnership enhances ecosystem diversity, supporting habitats and food for many other species.
