Irvine city leaders are considering reducing or canceling city-sponsored events to address a projected $37 million budget shortfall by July 2028. The City Council has canceled the annual CicloIrvine event, saving approximately $677,000 per year. Under its “Target ’28” plan, the city aims to reduce spending by $27 million and increase revenue by $10 million. Officials also plan to eliminate up to 123 positions through vacancies and employee departures, with the goal of avoiding layoffs. Additional events may be reviewed for possible cuts as the city works to balance its budget while maintaining essential services.

Stroke Prevention for Seniors: Healthy Habits and Warning Signs to Know

Stroke risk increases with age, but many strokes can be prevented through healthy habits and regular medical care. Dr. Abdullah Ibish, a neurologist at MemorialCare Saddleback Medical Center, shares simple ways seniors can lower their stroke risk, protect brain health, and maintain their independence.

Tips to Help Prevent Stroke:

  • Know your numbers: Check your blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol regularly.

  • Manage health conditions: Take prescribed medications for high blood pressure, diabetes, or irregular heartbeat (AFib).

  • Stay active: Aim for at least 30 minutes of walking, stretching, or other exercise most days.

  • Eat healthy: Choose more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins while limiting salt and processed foods.

  • Make healthy choices: Avoid smoking, limit alcohol, and keep up with regular medical checkups.

  • Recognize stroke warning signs: Remember BE FAST—Balance problems, Eye or vision changes, Face drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulties, and Time to call 911.

Important Reminder: If you notice any stroke warning signs, call 911 immediately, even if symptoms improve. Quick treatment can help reduce brain damage and improve recovery.

Meet Black Sage, a Native Plant Helping Irvine’s Wildlife Thrive

Black Sage (Salvia mellifera) is a drought-tolerant native shrub commonly found in Southern California’s coastal sage scrub habitats, including Irvine’s Bommer Canyon Preserve. Known for its gray-green leaves and pale blue-lavender flowers, it provides food for bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds, while offering shelter to birds and small wildlife. Historically used by Indigenous communities, Black Sage also helps support biodiversity and healthy ecosystems. To protect this plant, Irvine Ranch Conservancy grows Black Sage at its Native Seed Farm, where volunteers help collect seeds and prepare plants for restoration projects throughout the Irvine Ranch Natural Landmarks.
