Irvine Launches Review to Address Rise in Teen E-Bike Collisions

Irvine is seeing a sharp rise in dangerous e-bike collisions—especially among teens ages 13–16—with 192 crashes this year, most caused by riders under 18. At the November 12 Council meeting, Mayor Larry Agran and the Irvine Police Department highlighted growing safety concerns, increased severe injuries, and the need for stronger regulations and parent responsibility. Health experts compared e-bike injuries to motorcycle-level trauma, and residents voiced worries about unsafe riding behaviors. The Council unanimously directed staff and IPD to return within 45 days with recommendations on what actions the City can legally take to improve safety.

Ride Safe: E-Bike Safety Reminder from IUSD During Holiday Break

Here are a few quick reminders from IUSD to help keep e-bike riding safe for everyone:

Safety Tips

  • Families are encouraged to have open safety conversations with their child.

  • Riders should always wear helmets and follow all traffic laws.

  • Bikes should be checked regularly, including brakes, tires, and lights.

  • Riders should avoid taking over traffic lanes or blocking intersections.

  • It’s important to slow down in crowded areas and signal when passing.

  • Pedestrians should be given a friendly warning when approached, along with general courtesy and respect.

  • Reflective gear and proper lighting at night help keep riders visible and safe.

Two Suspects Arrested After Failed Apple Theft Scheme at Irvine Spectrum

Two men tried to steal Apple products at the Irvine Spectrum but were quickly caught. Target staff first noticed them tampering with security devices, and Apple store security recognized one from an earlier theft in Brea. One suspect walked out with an iPhone 17 Pro Max, and their car was full of stolen phones. One even tried to hide a stolen Apple Watch in a planter. Both men — Angel Osorio, 27, and Jonatan Alvarado, 28 — were arrested for organized retail theft.
