Irvine Landfill Faces Temporary Service Disruptions Amid Labor Strike

Operations at Irvine’s Frank R. Bowerman Landfill are experiencing temporary disruptions due to a Teamsters Local 952 strike involving a contract dispute with the County of Orange. The landfill remains open and continues accepting waste, but delays are possible. Public compost pickup, asphalt delivery, and soil delivery services are suspended until further notice, and the October 17 compost distribution event has been canceled. Traffic delays are also expected along Bee Canyon Access Road near Portola Parkway, so motorists are encouraged to avoid the area if possible.

Irvine Unified School District Ranks No. 1 in California for Academic Achievement

The Irvine Unified School District (IUSD) has ranked No. 1 in California in math, science, and English Language Arts (ELA) among public school districts with 35,000 or more students, continuing its 10-year record of academic excellence. According to the 2026 CAASPP results, IUSD students outperformed statewide averages by 32 percentage points in math, 29 in science, and 25 in ELA.

Alcohol and Antiperspirants: What Research Says About Breast Cancer Risk

UCI Health breast cancer specialist Dr. Nellie Nafissi shares that alcohol consumption is linked to an increased risk of breast cancer because it can damage cells and raise estrogen levels. However, research has not found convincing evidence that deodorants or antiperspirants increase breast cancer risk, despite concerns about aluminum ingredients. While genetics, environmental factors, and lifestyle habits can all influence breast cancer risk, Dr. Nafissi emphasizes the importance of understanding scientifically supported risks and separating facts from common misconceptions.

Understanding Cat Constipation: Signs, Causes, and Helpful Care Tips

Constipation is a common digestive problem in cats, especially middle-aged and older cats, that can cause discomfort and difficulty passing stool. While most cases can be treated with proper care, severe or recurring constipation may require veterinary treatment.
Common Causes: Dehydration, hairballs, lack of exercise, and certain health conditions may contribute to constipation.
Signs to Watch For: Difficulty using the litter box, hard or dry stools, reduced appetite, and low energy.
When to Seek Help: Contact your veterinarian if your cat hasn't had a bowel movement in 48–72 hours. Seek immediate care if your cat is straining but unable to urinate.
Treatment: Your veterinarian may recommend dietary adjustments, increased hydration, or medications to help relieve constipation.
Prevention: Keep fresh water available, encourage regular playtime, maintain a clean litter box, and groom your cat regularly.
With early attention and proper care, most cats can recover comfortably and return to their usual routines.
