U.S. Menโs Volleyball Team Clinches Bronze with 3-0 Victory Over Italy at Paris Olympics
David Smith, a University of California, Irvine (UCI) alumnus and the U.S. Menโs National Volleyball Team secured the teamโs third Olympic bronze medal with a 3-0 win over reigning world champions Italy in Paris on August 9. This victory marks the first time the U.S. and Italy faced off for an Olympic bronze, and it came after a heartbreaking semifinal loss to Poland. Setter Micah Christenson led a balanced attack, with five U.S. players contributing significantly. Despite Italyโs strong blocking and service game, the U.S. outperformed them in key moments, showing resilience and determination. Coach John Speraw praised the team's poise under pressure, and Christenson highlighted the challenge of bouncing back for the bronze medal match. T.J. DeFalco and Aaron Russell were standout performers, leading the U.S. to a well-deserved win.

Pedestrian Fatally Struck on Jamboree Road; Police Investigating Possible DUI
Early on August 9, a man sitting on Jamboree Road in Irvine was fatally struck by a 2017 Lexus. The driver cooperated with police, and investigators suspect drugs or alcohol may have been involved. The pedestrian's identity is withheld until next of kin are notified. Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Christopher Ostrowski (949-724-7047) at the Irvine Police Department.
