How Heat and Humidity Can Affect Asthma—and Ways to Stay Safe This Summer

Hot weather and high humidity can make asthma symptoms worse by irritating the airways and increasing exposure to common triggers like mold, pollen, and air pollution. Understanding these seasonal risks and taking a few simple precautions can help reduce flare-ups and make it easier to enjoy summer safely.

Key Summer Asthma Triggers

  • 🌡️ High heat and humidity

  • 🌫️ Air pollution and ozone

  • 🌱 Pollen

  • 🍔 BBQ smoke

  • 🏊 Chlorine from swimming pools

  • 🦠 Mold and dust mites

  • 💨 Windy weather that stirs up allergens

  • ❄️ Sudden temperature changes between air conditioning and outdoor heat

  • 🏠 Poor indoor ventilation

Tips to Help Manage Asthma in Summer

  • Keep your home well-ventilated.

  • Use a dehumidifier in damp areas, such as bathrooms.

  • Limit time outdoors during extremely hot or humid weather.

  • Take asthma medications as prescribed by your healthcare provider.

  • Seek medical care if symptoms worsen or are not relieved by your usual treatment.

  • Check daily weather, pollen, and air quality forecasts before spending time outdoors.

  • Stay hydrated to help your body cope with hot weather.

  • Avoid smoke from grills, campfires, cigarettes, and wildfires whenever possible.

  • Keep windows closed on high-pollen or poor air quality days.

  • Clean regularly to reduce dust, mold, and dust mites inside your home.
