Irvine City Council to Reconsider $20M Homeless Shelter Deal Amid Community Concerns
The Irvine City Council will hold a special meeting today, Nov. 5, to revisit its recent $20 million decision to buy two lots on Armstrong Avenue for a homeless shelter. The purchase, approved on Oct. 22 with Councilmember Mike Carroll opposing, is scheduled to close escrow, though concerns about transparency and community input have since arisen. Mayor Farrah Khan, who initially supported the decision, has now called for further discussion, citing lack of outreach before the purchase. Resident Chan Tran highlighted worries from the Irvine Business Complex community, where over 100 residents signed a petition for more transparency. City staff had emphasized the urgency of the deal, though Carroll questioned the rush, suggesting alternative options could have been explored.
