UC Irvine Secures $6M DoD Grant to Revolutionize Navy Thermal Systems
Yoonjin Won, associate professor of mechanical & aerospace engineering at UC Irvine, has secured a $6M Department of Defense grant to enhance thermal management systems for Navy power applications. Her project, “Fundamentals of Machine Learning for Phase Change Heat Transfer,” leverages machine learning and computer vision to tackle the complex physics of liquid-vapor phase change. Collaborating with experts from Stanford, MIT, and UIUC, the team aims to develop cutting-edge, physics-based models for designing advanced energy systems.

UC Irvine Men's Soccer Defeats Cal State Fullerton 1-0, Advances to Big West Semifinals
UC Irvine men’s soccer edged past Cal State Fullerton 1-0 in a tense Big West First Round match at Anteater Stadium. The game saw early chances for both teams, with UCI’s Misael Gonzalez scoring the decisive goal in the 80th minute from a tight angle off Brady Treinen's assist. Despite Fullerton’s 12-8 shot advantage, UCI's defense held firm, securing a shutout for goalkeeper Luke Pruter. The win advances UCI to the semifinals against No. 2 seed UC Santa Barbara on Nov. 9 at 7 PM. This marks UCI's 11th semifinal appearance and third straight matchup with UCSB in the semis.

Irvine Valley Men's Basketball Opens Season with Dominant 84-63 Win Over College of the Desert
Irvine Valley College men's basketball opened the 2024-25 season with an 84-63 home win over College of the Desert, marking new coach Jason Garey’s first victory. IVC led 42-29 at halftime, shooting 45.5% overall and 50% from three. Sophomore Ammon Allan led with 19 points and six assists, while three others scored in double figures. The Lasers' defense held COD to 34.5% shooting.

Northwood High Football Prepares for CIF Division 6 Playoffs with Strong Momentum
Northwood High’s football team enters the CIF Division 6 playoffs with strong momentum after defeating Dana Hills 22-7, finishing 3-2 in league play. Coach JC Clarke praised his players for their hard work and resilience, highlighting standout performances by seniors Cole Hidalgo (two interceptions), Joseph Harper (150 rushing yards, key tackles), and Donald Longo (team leader in tackles). Despite two close losses to Laguna Beach and Orange, the Timberwolves (8-2 overall) are optimistic as they host Ayala (2-8) Friday at 7 p.m. at Irvine Stadium. The winner advances to face the victor of the Murrieta Mesa-Ontario Christian matchup in round two.
