Irvine City Council Plans to Tighten Anti-Camping Law After Shelving Homeless Shelter Plan
The Irvine City Council voted 4-1 to strengthen its anti-camping ordinance, aiming to streamline the process of clearing homeless encampments after backing out of a proposed homeless shelter due to public opposition. The updated law, which still requires a second vote, allows encampments to be cleared with 24-hour notice and mandates holding personal property for 90 days. Mayor Farrah Khan emphasized maintaining public safety while offering resources to the homeless. The ordinance follows a Supreme Court ruling that cities no longer need shelter beds to enforce anti-camping laws. However, Councilmember Kathleen Treseder opposed the changes, citing the city’s lack of shelter options and a recent $1 million loss from canceling the shelter project. The ordinance includes a 120-day delay to give the incoming city council time to review it.
Irvine Police to Conduct DUI Checkpoint Near Culver and Harvard on November 15
On November 15, the Irvine Police Department will conduct a DUI and Driver’s License checkpoint near Culver and Harvard from 8:30 p.m. to 2 a.m., funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety. The checkpoint aims to reduce impaired driving injuries and fatalities. If you see a drunk driver, call 9-1-1.
Pacific Symphony Ushers in New Era with Alexander Shelley Named New Artistic Director
Alexander Shelley has been named the new artistic and musical director of the Pacific Symphony Orchestra, succeeding Carl St.Clair, who served for 35 years. The announcement was made at Segerstrom Concert Hall on November 13, 2024. Shelley, a British maestro, brings an impressive international resume, including roles with the National Arts Centre Orchestra in Canada and London’s Royal Philharmonic. Known for his dynamic leadership and community engagement, Shelley aims to build on St.Clair’s legacy. He will officially begin his full duties in the 2026-27 season, focusing on diverse programming, education, and connecting the orchestra with Orange County's vibrant community.
IUSD High Schools Launch Thanksgiving Food Drive to Support Local Charities
IUSD high schools are hosting their first Thanksgiving Food Drive, running until November 15! In a friendly competition, Irvine, Woodbridge, Northwood, Portola, and University High Schools aim to collect the most canned and non-perishable items for local charities. Donations will benefit Second Harvest Food Bank, Families Forward, and South County Outreach. Look for donation bins at each school and contact your school for more details.
More Than a Fall Favorite: Here’s Why You Should Add Pumpkin to Your Diet
Pumpkins aren’t just for decoration—they’re packed with health benefits!
They’re low in calories, rich in fiber, and loaded with essential nutrients like vitamin A, vitamin C, and potassium.
Pumpkin’s antioxidants, such as beta carotene and flavonoids, support immune health, protect vision, and may reduce the risk of cancer.
They also promote heart health by lowering bad cholesterol and help improve sleep quality thanks to tryptophan.
Incorporating pumpkin into your diet can boost overall wellness, making it a nutritious addition to your holiday meals. Consult your physician if unsure about dietary changes, and enjoy a healthy holiday season!
New Drone Initiative at OC Landfills Aims to Reduce Methane Emissions and Improve Air Quality
Orange County Waste and Recycling has introduced drone technology to improve methane leak detection at the Frank R. Bowerman Landfill in Irvine, which spans over 500 acres. Traditional inspection methods, which require staff to manually survey the landfill over two days, are time-consuming. The new drones, equipped with thermal cameras, can scan the entire site in a fraction of the time, producing detailed maps and pinpointing leaks for rapid sealing. This initiative aims to mitigate emissions more effectively, improving air quality and operational efficiency. Although the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has yet to accept drone-generated reports as official records, policy changes are anticipated. To ensure transparency, the data is reviewed by an independent third party, which, despite additional costs, is considered more efficient than traditional methods.

Keep Your Feathered Friend Safe: Watch Out for These Plants
Birds love to explore, and sometimes that means nibbling on plants. But did you know some common houseplants and garden favorites can be harmful to your pet?
- Common toxic plants for birds:
- Avocado: Breathing difficulties, heart problems.
- Onions & Garlic: Red blood cell destruction, kidney damage.
- Rhubarb leaves: Digestive upset, low calcium, kidney damage.
- Lily of the Valley, Oleander, Rhododendron, Japanese Yew, Foxglove: Abnormal heart rhythms.
- Dieffenbachia & Philodendron: Digestive upset, mouth pain, potential breathing issues.
To keep your bird happy and healthy, stick to bird-safe greens and always double-check before introducing new plants. If you ever suspect poisoning, the Pet Poison Helpline is just a call away at 800-213-6680.
