Irvine City Council Approves Rezoning for 15,000 Homes Near John Wayne Airport Despite Concerns
The City of Irvine has rezoned the Irvine Business Complex near John Wayne Airport for 15,000 homes, despite concerns from the airport commission about noise, safety, and land use. Pressured by state mandates to build more housing, Irvine's City Council voted 4-1 in favor of the rezoning, risking penalties if they missed a housing plan deadline. The decision overrode objections from the airport commission, joining other local cities in similar actions. Councilmember Tammy Kim supported the move, citing a need for affordable housing and sustainable planning, while Councilman Larry Agran voted against it, citing environmental and transit concerns.
