Irvine City Council Approves Plan for 57,656 New Housing Units
On August 13th, the Irvine City Council, in a 4-1 vote, approved an amendment to the Cityโs General Plan to permit the construction of up to 57,656 new housing units, including 10,000 affordable units, in compliance with a state mandate. Vice Mayor Larry Agran cast the dissenting vote, expressing concerns that the amendment was hastily adopted and raised significant environmental, safety, and traffic issues. He advocated for utilizing the six months remaining before the state deadline to develop alternative strategies, such as engaging with the Irvine Company to convert existing units to affordable housing. Additionally, the Council chose to disregard the Airport Land Use Commission's warnings regarding the proposed addition of 15,000 units near John Wayne Airport, which the Commission deemed exposed to undue noise and safety risks.
Cal State LA and UC Irvine Secure $1M NSF Grant to Advance Materials Science Research and Education
Cal State LA, in collaboration with UC Irvine's Samueli School of Engineering, has received a $1 million NSF PREM grant to advance materials science research and education. This three-year grant will establish the NSF PREM Center for Bioinspired and Architectured Materials (CBAM) at Cal State LA, focusing on innovative materials that mimic natural structures for applications in energy, health, and sustainability. The partnership aims to broaden participation of underrepresented students in STEM, offering advanced training, summer programs, and workshops. Both universities are excited about the collaboration, which promises significant advancements in materials research and education.

This minimally invasive procedure was performed on a 75-year-old from Carlsbad and an 85-year-old from Costa Mesa by Dr. Antonio H. Frangieh, medical director of the UCI Health structural heart program. Approved by the FDA in February 2024, the procedure offers a new treatment option for patients with severe tricuspid valve disease, a condition often leading to heart failure. UCI Health continues to expand its capabilities, treating complex heart conditions at multiple locations, including its advanced centers in Orange and Irvine.

How Your Catโs Diet Directly Impacts Skin and Coat Health
Nutrition plays a crucial role in the health of a cat's skin and haircoat. Deficiencies or imbalances in essential nutrients, such as proteins, fats, and minerals, can lead to various skin and coat problems, including dryness, dullness, hair loss, and even skin diseases.
Factors like a cat's age, the quality of its diet, and specific food-related risks can impact its skin and haircoat.
Essential fatty acids and minerals like zinc and copper are vital for maintaining a healthy coat.
Additionally, omega-3 fatty acids can help manage inflammatory skin conditions.
Regular veterinary consultations are essential for ensuring your catโs diet supports optimal skin and haircoat health.

UC Irvine men's soccer opened their 2024 home season with a tense 1-1 draw against Vermont. Vermont broke the deadlock in the 64th minute with a goal by Yaniv Bazini, but UCI equalized in the 80th minute when Marcus Lee scored his first career goal. UCI played the final minutes with 10 men after a late red card but missed a crucial penalty, ending the game in a draw. UCI, now 0-1-1, will face Mercyhurst next on September 1.
