Keep Kids Safe in the Water: Essential Summer Swimming Tips for Parents

Swimming is a great way for kids to stay active and cool during the summer, but it’s important to stay aware of safety risks. Here are key tips to keep your children safe around water:

  • Sun Protection: Apply sunscreen before swimming, reapply every 2 hours, and use sun-protective clothing. Avoid sunscreen on babies under 6 months.

  • Prevent Swimmer’s Ear: Use alcohol-vinegar ear drops after swimming, dry ears thoroughly, and avoid aggressive wax removal.

  • Stay Out if Sick: Avoid swimming with colds or diarrhea to prevent health risks and pool contamination.

  • No Headfirst Diving: Teach kids to enter feet-first in shallow water and to dive under—not into—ocean waves.

  • Always Supervise: Assign a responsible adult or lifeguard as a “water watcher” who knows CPR and can act quickly.

  • Avoid Floaties: Use U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets instead of inflatable arm bands for safer flotation.

Irvine Ranch Conservancy Leads Native Oak Restoration in 1.16-Acre Baker Canyon Site

The Irvine Ranch Conservancy is revitalizing local ecosystems by restoring native oak habitats. In a 1.16-acre meadow at OC Parks' Baker Canyon—previously overrun by invasive eucalyptus and grasses—the team began replanting coast live oaks in 2022 using acorns collected nearby. With careful attention from staff and volunteers, including watering, mulching, and wildlife protection, many of the young trees have already grown over four feet tall, signaling a successful return of this vital native species.
