UC Irvine Scientists Unveil Groundbreaking Velcro-Like Immunotherapy Targeting All Cancer Types

UC Irvine researchers have developed a groundbreaking “Velcro-like” immunotherapy called GlyTR (“glitter”) that can destroy a wide range of cancers while sparing healthy tissue.
The study, led by Dr. Michael Demetriou and published in Cell, shows that GlyTR compounds target dense sugar molecules (glycans) found on tumor cells, allowing the body’s immune system to attack cancers of the breast, lung, colon, pancreas, and more without toxicity.
Backed by the National Cancer Institute’s Cancer Moonshot Initiative, the therapy is moving toward human clinical trials within two years.
If successful, this could mark a major breakthrough in universal cancer treatment, potentially transforming immunotherapy for both solid tumors and blood cancers.
