Thanksgiving Kitchen Safety: Tips to Prevent Fires and Burns

Thanksgiving sees more than double the average number of home fires, mostly due to cooking mishaps, according to the U.S. Fire Administration. Dr. Syed Saquib of UCI Health warns that crowded holiday kitchens and deep-frying turkeys are major culprits.

Simple safety tips include:

  • never leaving stoves unattended

  • supervising children and pets

  • avoiding loose clothing near flames

  • keeping flammable items away from cooking areas

For deep-frying, ensure the turkey is fully thawed, pre-measure oil, and fry outdoors on a stable surface.

Treat burns with cool water, not ice or home remedies, and seek medical attention for severe cases.

Guinea Pig Care Made Easy with Irvine Animal Care Center

  • Guinea pigs need daily exercise, ideally one hour of free-range play in a safe, guinea pig-proofed environment.

  • Avoid using wheels or exercise balls as they can cause injuries. Ensure the play area is secure, hide cords, and block small spaces.

  • Guinea pigs thrive with a companion of the same sex, as they are highly social animals.

  • Key training principles include trust, positive reinforcement, and patience. Build trust by offering treats, calling them by name, and talking to them.

  • Keep their habitat in a shared living space to help them acclimate to your presence and voice.

  • Always approach them gently to ensure they feel safe.
