Help Fight Hunger in Orange County with Second Harvest This September

Second Harvest Food Bank in Irvine is inviting the community to take part in Hunger Action Month this September, with volunteer opportunities, fundraising activities, and events aimed at raising awareness of food insecurity in Orange County. The organization reports that 1 in 6 Orange County children experiences food insecurity.
Upcoming ways to get involved:
Sept. 10: Help spread awareness using Second Harvest’s social media toolkit.
Sept. 11: Join special 9/11 commemorative volunteer shifts at the distribution center or Harvest Solutions Farm.
Sept. 13: Participate in a hunger awareness event at Wild Rivers.
Sept. 17: Support the effort by rounding up grocery purchases at Ralphs/Food 4 Less.
Sept. 26 at 3:30 p.m.: Attend Second Harvest’s truck pull fundraising event.

Irvine Spectrum Celebrates the Grand Opening of Its New SunWheel

Join the Spectrum SunWheel Grand Opening on Saturday, September 19, at Irvine Spectrum Center for a full day of live music, entertainment, treats, giveaways, and special activities. The first 300 guests will receive a complimentary SunWheel ride, with pop-ups from Auntie Anne’s, Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream, and Dave & Buster’s throughout the celebration.
Heritage Park Library Hosts Weekly ESL Conversation Club on Sundays

Join the ESL Cafe Conversation Club every Sunday from 3–4 p.m. at Heritage Park Library to practice English speaking and communication skills with other adult learners in a friendly, supportive setting.

Join “Communities Come Together, Irvine” on Tuesday, September 29, from 5–7 p.m. at Sweet Shade Neighborhood Park. Hosted by IUSD Special Education in partnership with Irvine Police and the Orange County Fire Authority, this family-friendly event will offer safety education, activities, and opportunities to meet local community helpers.

Eat Right for Better Sight: Foods That Support Eye Health

Eating a balanced diet rich in colorful fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins and healthy fats can help protect vision at every age. Nutrients such as vitamins A, C and E, zinc, lutein, zeaxanthin and other antioxidants support the retina, help protect against oxidative damage and may reduce the risk of cataracts, macular degeneration and dry eyes. Good nutrition is especially important for children as their eyes and vision continue to develop.

Turkey Zucchini Burgers with Zesty Lemon Yogurt Sauce: Zucchini provides lutein, zeaxanthin and vitamin C, while turkey adds zinc and vitamin B12. Herbs, spices and lemon provide additional antioxidants and nutrients that support long-term eye health.
Frozen Watermelon & Kiwi Skewers with Chili-Lime Salt: Watermelon provides lycopene, beta-carotene and hydration, while kiwi is rich in vitamin C, lutein and zeaxanthin. Together, they make a refreshing, kid-friendly snack packed with nutrients.

Explore Local Birds with Sea and Sage Audubon’s Beginner Birding Workshop

Sea and Sage Audubon Society is offering a 10-week introductory birding workshop led by Sylvia Gallagher for beginners and anyone looking to improve their bird identification skills. Starting October 6–8, the program includes weekly Zoom classes and four guided Orange County field trips, with Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday sections available.

Join Crafternoon for an Afternoon of Creativity and Crafts in Irvine

Young artists can get creative at Crafternoon at the Irvine Fine Arts Center, with hands-on activities using different colors, textures, and craft techniques. Upcoming classes are October 21, November 18, and December 2, from 3:30–5 p.m., with each session offering a new project for participants to create.

Laugh for a Good Cause at Comedy Unleashed in Irvine

Comedy Unleashed returns to the Irvine Improv on Tuesday, September 15, featuring live comedy, dinner, and an online auction. Proceeds from ticket sales support Irvine Animal Care Center programs and services that care for shelter pets and help them find loving homes.

Freshman Taylor Boice was named Anteater of the Week after recording double-digit kills in all three matches at the Bulldog Invitational, including 18 kills against New Mexico State and a .714 hitting percentage against Southern Utah.

Woodbridge Girls Flag Football Opens League Play With 59-12 Win Over Northwood

Woodbridge girls flag football opened Pacific Coast League play with a 59-12 win over Northwood, improving to 9-4 overall. Quarterback Delia Stone led the Warriors with 307 passing yards, 109 rushing yards, multiple touchdowns and two interceptions.

Irvine Man Turns Himself In Following Rancho San Joaquin Golf Course Incident

Irvine Police reported that 58-year-old Irvine resident Dean Melmoth turned himself in following efforts by officers to contact him at his residence. He was booked into Orange County Jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon in connection with an August 29 incident at Rancho San Joaquin Golf Course, where a golfer was allegedly struck in the head with a golf club.
