Despite initial hopeless prognosis and the stigma around lung cancer, UCI Health provided innovative treatment and unwavering support, particularly from Dr. Nagasaka. The Thorps now contribute to UCI's cancer research, emphasizing the importance of community and medical advancements in the fight against cancer.

Celebrating the Life and Legacy of Lily Afshar: A Virtuoso Gone Too Soon

Renowned Iranian classical guitarist Lily Afshar (1960-2023) passed away on October 24 after a long illness. Celebrated for blending formal Western training with Persian cultural heritage, she performed globally and was remembered fondly for her 2022 performance with the Pacific Symphony at the Nowruz concert. Afshar's unique artistry leaves a lasting impact on the world of music, and she will be buried in northern Iran.

She is the Senior VP of Community Operations at Jamboree Housing Corporation, managing over 100 properties, a team of 60+, and a $3.2 billion asset portfolio. Since 2019, she's led Jamboree's strategic planning and has overseen the development of 10,000+ homes for 20,000+ residents, emphasizing affordable housing and community strengthening.

Buck Gully Reserve, a 300-acre coastal canyon within the 40,000-acre Irvine Ranch Natural Landmarks, offers stunning ocean views and diverse habitats in Newport Beach. Managed by Irvine Ranch Conservancy (IRC) in partnership with the city, it features a year-round stream, riparian and coastal sage scrub habitats, and nearly five miles of trails. In 2012 and 2020, the trail system was enhanced and repaired. The IRC and city also organize habitat restoration events, with upcoming opportunities on October 27 and November 17. Sophomore Soccer Star Agaton Pourshahidi Leads Team to Victory, Named Anteater of the Week

Agaton Pourshahidi, a sophomore in men's soccer, was named Sgt. Pepperoni’s Anteater of the Week for his outstanding performance in Big West games. He scored twice in a 2-0 victory against Sac State, with one goal from a penalty kick and another on an open net. He also made a shot on goal in another 2-0 win over Cal Poly, bringing his season total to a team-leading three goals.
UC Irvine Golf Team Secures 10th Place at The Clash At Boulder Creek

UC Irvine's golf team finished 10th at The Clash At Boulder Creek, with a season-best team score of 285 in the second round. Jasmine Chen led the team, placing 14th with a score of four-under par 212, and Megan Yang placed 32nd with a score of 218. Charlotte Ryoo had the team's best final round, tying for 42nd place. Kiana Briggs tied for 75th with 41 pars, while Alyson Sor did not finish and Chanelle Hwang placed 102nd in her first collegiate event. The team will play next on Jan. 28, 2024, against UC Riverside.
UC Irvine Women's Tennis Secures Two Victories in Extra Match Singles

UC Irvine women's tennis team participated in extra match singles and doubles on Saturday. Haily Huynh and Nour Khayat secured singles victories for UCI, while the rest of the team faced defeats. In doubles, all UCI pairs were defeated. Huynh swiftly won her match, while Khayat clinched a tight three-set victory.
UC Irvine Assistant Throws Coach, Tony Ciarelli, Inducted into CIF-Southern Section Hall of Fame

Tony Ciarelli, UC Irvine assistant throws coach, has been inducted into the CIF-Southern Section Hall of Fame, recognizing his extensive and successful coaching career at both high school and university levels. He has mentored numerous state champions and qualifiers, and since joining UC Irvine in 2021, has led the throws squad to multiple titles and awards. The induction ceremony also posthumously honored his brother, Rocky, a notable volleyball coach.
UC Irvine Women's Volleyball Matches Moved to Crawford Hall

The UC Irvine women's volleyball matches this week are relocated to Crawford Hall due to a facility issue at Bren Events Center, but match times are unchanged. Close Call: Lasers Battle to the End in High-Stakes OEC Clash with Fullerton

In a key Orange Empire Conference match, the Irvine Valley men's soccer team (No. 12) faced off against Fullerton (No. 1) for the second time, ultimately losing 3-2. Despite a strong push in the final 15 minutes and a near-goal on the last play, IVC couldn't secure the equalizer. Both teams scored in the first half, with Fullerton pulling ahead in the second half. IVC's record now stands at 9-3-4 overall and 4-1-1 in conference play, while Fullerton improved to 15-1-1 and 8-0-1 in the OEC. The Lasers will play next at home against Orange Coast, celebrating sophomore afternoon with a pre-game ceremony.
