Ideological Tensions and Faculty Decisions: Examining Hostility Toward Jewish Studies at UC Irvine

UC Irvine has been described as a hostile environment for those who do not harshly condemn Israel, according to Rabbi Daniel Levine. Jewish students have reported feeling marginalized and labeled as racist or Islamophobic when voicing their concerns. Rabbi Levine, who taught Jewish Texts, had his contract as a lecturer not renewed, a decision the university explains as a result of hiring two new full-time faculty members to strengthen the Jewish studies program. However, students claim this decision was influenced by calls for an academic boycott of Israel and the removal of Zionist programming from campus life.
The situation has further escalated with incidents of threats and slander against faculty members, including the posting of a "Wanted" poster targeting a political science and Jewish studies professor. Despite the university's explanation that the hiring process was rigorous and based on scholarly merit, students remain unconvinced. They argue that ideological biases played a role in the decision and continue to demand Rabbi Levine's reinstatement. The controversy highlights a broader issue of ideological tension and a hostile climate on campus, with students feeling their concerns are dismissed and their academic environment compromised.
UCI Professors Awarded Prestigious Guggenheim Fellowships

Two UC Irvine professors, Wang Feng and Gene Tsudik, have been awarded prestigious Guggenheim Fellowships. Feng, a sociology professor, will use his fellowship to complete a book on China's one-child policy. Tsudik, a computer science professor and Fulbright scholar, will focus on creating malware-resistant devices. They join 186 other distinguished scientists and scholars as 2024 Guggenheim fellows.
