Goats Clear Brush in Turtle Rock to Support Fire Prevention

More than 400 goats recently assisted with weed abatement and fire mitigation in Irvine’s Turtle Rock area, clearing brush across several acres of steep terrain.

  • The goats worked daily under herder supervision and were secured at night with the help of four trained Pyrenean guard dogs.

  • This effort, in partnership with Sage Goat Grazing, supports the City’s ongoing fire prevention work.

  • Residents are encouraged to take steps toward wildfire preparedness by visiting cityofirvine.org/prepare.

Intersection Improvements Underway at Culver & Alton

This week, crews will be working on the medians at Culver Drive and Alton Parkway from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. as part of an ongoing intersection improvement project.

  • Expect single lane closures in both directions on Culver and a closure of the inner southbound left turn lane on Alton.

  • While traffic will be managed to minimize disruption, delays are likely—drivers are encouraged to take alternate routes.

Pediatric Summer Safety Tips to Keep Kids Healthy and Hydrated

Summer brings sunshine, play, and family outings—but also heat, bugs, and safety risks. Here are some way to keep kids healthy, hydrated, and happy all season long:

Outdoor Safety

  • Apply SPF 30+ sunscreen every 2 hours; use hats and UV clothing.

  • Use kid-safe insect repellent and cover up during dawn/dusk.

  • Supervise kids near water, playgrounds, and bikes.

  • Watch for heat illness—take breaks in shade and cool areas.

Hydration Tips

  • Kids need 5–8 cups of water daily—offer sips throughout the day.

  • Serve hydrating snacks like watermelon and oranges.

  • Try fruit-infused water or homemade popsicles for fun.

Quick Summer Fixes

  • Treat sunburn with aloe or cool compresses.

  • Clean and cover minor cuts and scrapes.

  • Use calamine for bug bites or heat rashes.

Travel & Outings

  • Never leave kids in hot cars, even briefly.

  • Use helmets and pads for bikes and sports.

Indoor Fun for Hot Days

  • Visit libraries or indoor play centers.

  • Try crafts or indoor games.

  • Balance screen time with active indoor play

What Goes in the Organics Bin? A Quick Guide for Orange County Residents

Orange County residents are encouraged to place eligible food and yard waste into their organics bins to support composting efforts and reduce landfill use. Here's what belongs in the bin:

  • ✔️ Leftover food, including meat and bones

  • ✔️ Fruit and vegetable scraps

  • ✔️ Coffee grounds and filters

  • ✔️ Grass clippings and leaves

Collected materials are converted into compost through the county’s organics recycling program. Proper sorting helps contribute to local sustainability efforts.
