How to Protect Your Lungs and Breathe Easier During Wildfire Smoke

Wildfire smoke can travel long distances and affect air quality even if you're far from an active fire. UCI Health experts say taking simple precautions can help protect your lungs and reduce health risks, especially for children, older adults, pregnant women, and people with heart or lung conditions.
Stay indoors when air quality is poor, and keep windows and doors closed.
Check the Air Quality Index (AQI) regularly and limit outdoor activities when levels are unhealthy.
Use air conditioning on recirculate mode and change filters regularly. HEPA filters provide the best protection.
Create a clean-air space at home with a portable air purifier if possible.
Avoid strenuous exercise outdoors when smoke or ash is present.
If you must go outside, wear a properly fitted N95 mask. Cloth and paper masks do not filter fine smoke particles.
Watch for symptoms such as wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, dizziness or an irregular heartbeat.
Seek medical help right away if you have severe breathing problems, chest pain, confusion or cannot speak in full sentences.
After a wildfire, wear an N95 or P100 mask and protective clothing when cleaning ash.
Wet mop or wipe ash instead of using leaf blowers or standard vacuums, which can stir particles back into the air.
Keep children and pets away from ash-covered areas and wash toys and exposed skin promptly.
Prepare ahead by keeping medications, N95 masks and air quality alert apps or notifications readily available during wildfire season.

Turtles, Nature, and Badges: Join Mason Park's Jr. Ranger Adventure

Kids ages 8โ12 are invited to join a fun and educational Jr. Ranger Adventure at William Mason Regional Park on Friday, June 26. Participants will explore the outdoors while learning about invasive species and observing the behavior of the park's turtles. The program is designed to inspire curiosity, foster a deeper appreciation for nature, and encourage young explorers to become caring stewards of Orange County's natural resources.

UCI 's Molly Lynch to Conclude National Choreographers Initiative After More Than 20 Years

After more than 20 years of leading the National Choreographers Initiative (NCI), UC Irvine Dance Department Chair Molly Lynch will conclude the program with its final performance, "The Last Dance!" on July 25 at Irvine Barclay Theatre. Founded in 2004, NCI has provided choreographers and professional dancers with a space to develop and refine new works, helping launch numerous careers and bringing nearly three dozen pieces to major ballet companies. Although NCI is coming to an end, Lynch will continue her work at UC Irvine and looks forward to supporting the next generation of artists through teaching and mentorship.

Leonardo Delarosa, 30, of Riverside; Danielle Kathryn Custer, 38, of Anaheim; and Sergio Arturo Diaz, 30, of Santa Ana, were arrested on suspicion of grand theft and conspiracy.
