Summer BBQ Safety: What to Know Before You Fire Up the Grill

Grilling season brings plenty of delicious moments, but it’s also important to keep food safety in mind. Katie Rankell from UCI Health shares practical tips to help families enjoy outdoor meals without worry:
Cook thoroughly: Use a meat thermometer — 165°F for poultry, 160°F for ground meats, and 145°F for whole cuts.
Keep an eye on time: In hot weather (90°F+), don’t leave food out for more than an hour.
Practice safe handling: Separate raw and cooked foods, and wash hands often.
Chill smart: Keep perishable items like meat and dairy in a cooler until ready to use.
Know the signs: If symptoms like cramps, nausea, or diarrhea appear, seek help — especially for those at higher risk.

Eldredge shares that coaching brings a unique joy, especially in seeing students overcome challenges.
He highlights skating’s powerful life lessons—resilience, confidence, and discipline—whether or not a student aims for the Olympics.
Eldredge encourages parents to let their kids try skating, as it fosters both physical skills and personal growth.

Tick Season Tips: Where to Check Your Dog This Summer

Ticks are more prevalent during the summer months, and dogs are especially vulnerable to them. Regularly checking your pet can help keep them safe, healthy, and comfortable throughout the season. VCA Animal Hospitals suggests inspecting the following areas for ticks:
Inner and outer ears
Under the legs
Under the tail
Around the eyes
Beneath the collar
Frequent checks are a simple but effective way to protect your dog from tick-related health issues.
