Body Aches and Pain: Signs, Causes, and When to Get Checked Out

Body aches and pain can happen for many reasons, from dehydration and stress to infections, medication side effects, or underlying health conditions. Understanding the cause is the first step toward finding the right treatment and getting back to feeling your best.

  • Body aches can affect the entire body, while muscle aches are often related to overuse, strains, or sprains.

  • Common causes include dehydration, infections such as the flu, stress, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, autoimmune conditions, and certain medications.

  • It may be a good idea to seek medical care if pain is severe, does not improve with self-care, follows a tick bite, or is accompanied by symptoms such as fever, rash, swelling, or redness.

  • Treatment may include addressing the root condition, rest, elevation, ice or heat therapy, pain relief options, and complementary approaches such as massage, meditation, or acupuncture.
