Irvine City Council Votes Down Proposal for Veterans Cemetery at ARDA Site

On May 27, the Irvine City Council voted on a resolution to move forward with establishing a Veterans Memorial Park & Cemetery at the ARDA site within the Great Park. Four councilmembers—William Go, Melinda Liu, James Mai, and Kathleen Treseder—voted against the proposal, citing various concerns including project compatibility and long-term planning. This decision marked a shift from previous public statements by some councilmembers expressing support for the cemetery. Supporters of the resolution, including Mayor Larry Agran and Councilmembers Mike Carroll and Betty Martinez Franco, emphasized the importance of honoring commitments made to veterans and the community. The proposal remains a point of public interest and ongoing discussion in Irvine.
UCI Police Investigating Reported Assault at Camino del Sol Housing

UC Irvine police are actively searching for a man suspected of raping a victim around 11 p.m. on May 16 at the Camino del Sol student housing. The incident was reported the next day. The suspect is described as a white male, 30–40 years old, medium build, wearing a dark t-shirt and navy-blue hat, and driving a dark-colored Acura. Officers canvassed the area but did not locate him. UCI Police urge anyone with information to call 949-824-5223 and remind the community to stay vigilant, avoid traveling alone when possible, trust instincts, and intervene or seek help if someone may be at risk. In emergencies, call 9-1-1.

Fighting Weeds and Bugs: Here’s How IRC Has Protected Local Wildlands for 20 Years

In recognition of its 20th anniversary, the Irvine Ranch Conservancy (IRC) is highlighting its Invasive Species Control Program, which supports the preservation of native habitats across Southern California’s wildlands.
Invasive species—including certain plants and insects—can disrupt ecosystems by competing with native species for resources such as nutrients, space, and light.
IRC addresses these challenges through site-specific strategies, including early detection and long-term monitoring.
Examples of their work include reducing Saharan mustard at Loma Ridge, managing the spread of stinkwort in Santiago Creek, and controlling infestations of the Goldspotted Oak Borer.
The program also involves collaboration with volunteers and regional partners.
