Free Grocery Food Boxes Available for Eligible Irvine Residents August 13

The City of Irvine will distribute free grocery boxes to eligible residents on Thursday, August 13, from 9 a.m. to noon at Great Park Parking Lot 2. Each household may receive one approximately 30-pound food box per month, containing items such as fresh produce, canned and frozen vegetables, beans, juice, dairy, nuts, and, when available, meat, poultry, or fish. Food boxes are available on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last.

Great Park Set to Welcome New Baseball Team Under Five-Year Partnership with City

Irvine has approved a five-year agreement with Innovation Baseball Partners to bring a new independent Pioneer Baseball League team to the Great Park beginning next summer. The city will receive revenue through monthly rent, a share of advertising and stadium naming rights, home game fees, and future ticket fees, while retaining control over stadium scheduling and any future seating expansion. The team is expected to play 48 home games each season and provide at least $25,000 in annual community programs, such as youth clinics, camps, coaching, and donated tickets. City leaders said the agreement could help generate revenue as Irvine addresses projected budget deficits, while also expanding recreational opportunities for the community.

SomiSomi Welcomes August with Sweet Summer Treats

SomiSomi is welcoming August with a lineup of refreshing summer treats, including a creamy banana soft serve, black sesame taiyaki, and Strawberry Matcha Milk. The seasonal offerings are coming soon and are perfect for cooling off and enjoying the last weeks of summer.

Free Swim Safety Class for Families Coming to University Park Library, Aug. 12

The Irvine Public Library, in partnership with the Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA) and AAP-Orange County Pediatricians, is hosting a free swim safety class on Wednesday, August 12, from 3โ€“4 p.m. at University Park Library. Families will learn essential water safety tips, including how to keep young children safe around water, the importance of wearing a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket, and drowning prevention strategies for pools, beaches, lakes, and other waterways. Children ages 6 and younger who attend with a parent or caregiver can also receive a complimentary life jacket fitting by City Aquatics staff.

UCI Health: Emerging Migraine Treatments Improve Prevention and Care

A migraine is more than just a headacheโ€”itโ€™s a neurological condition that can affect work, family life, and everyday activities. New treatments and earlier care are making it easier for many people to reduce migraine attacks and manage their symptoms.

  • Migraine is different from a regular headache and can cause severe pain, nausea, sensitivity to light and sound, dizziness, blurry vision, and other symptoms.

  • There is no single test for migraine. Doctors diagnose it based on your symptoms and medical history.

  • Keep track of your migraines using a notebook, calendar, or app to help identify triggers like stress, poor sleep, dehydration, certain foods, or weather changes.

  • Don't wait to get help. See a doctor if your migraines happen often, become more severe, or make it hard to work or do everyday activities.

  • New CGRP medications are helping many people prevent migraines or stop attacks with fewer side effects than many older treatments.

  • Healthy habits can make a difference, including getting enough sleep, staying hydrated, eating regular meals, managing stress, and avoiding your personal triggers.

  • Non-medication treatments such as mindfulness, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and nerve stimulation devices may also help some people.

  • Treatment is different for everyone, so doctors work with patients to find the best combination of therapies.

  • Researchers are developing even more treatments, giving hope for better migraine care in the future.

Keep Your Furry Friends Safe by Avoiding Hot Cars This Summer

The Irvine Animal Care Center encourages pet owners to never leave their pets unattended in a parked vehicle, even if the windows are cracked open or the weather is cloudy. Temperatures inside a car can rise rapidly and become life-threatening within minutes. If your pet can't come inside with you, the safest place for them is at home.
