Forty-Nine Individuals Charged in Connection with May 15 UC Irvine Protest Following Police Declaration of Unlawful Assembly

Thirty-nine additional protestors have been charged with failure to disperse after a May 15 protest at UC Irvine was declared an unlawful assembly by campus police. These charges come a month after ten others were charged for the same protest, with all set for arraignment. Among the new charges, one protestor is also accused of vandalism and resisting arrest. The Orange County DA emphasized the right to peaceful assembly but stated that criminal behavior during protests will be prosecuted. The defendants include two professors, a teaching assistant, and numerous UCI students.
