Step Into Your Own Hallmark Movie: Irvine's New Immersive Musical Experience Debuts

For those who want to live out their own Hallmark movie fantasy, Irvine Theater Company presents “My (Unauthorized) Hallmark Movie Musical” by Eloise Coopersmith, with music by Roxanna Ward. This immersive rom-com experience, directed by Anne Runolfsson, premieres in Orange County and features Coopersmith interacting with pre-recorded performances. The evening includes a pre-show "Sip and Snap" happy hour, themed games, and photo ops.

UCI Professors to Teach and Research Abroad as Fulbright U.S. Scholars in South Korea and Colombia

UC Irvine professors Andrea Henderson and Alexander Huezo have been awarded Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program awards for the 2024-25 academic year.

  • Henderson, an English professor, will teach a graduate course and research Victorian encounter narratives at Yonsei University in South Korea.

  • Huezo, an assistant professor of global and international studies, will research the impacts of natural rights on ethnic communities in Colombia and teach an environmental workshop at ICESI University.

The Fulbright program supports scholars in teaching and research abroad, fostering international collaborations. The deadline to apply for 2025-26 awards is Sept. 16, with webinars available for more information.

UCI Health has inaugurated the Nicholas R. Conway, DO, and Betty Sha Foundation Infusion Terrace at the Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center in Irvine. Kathleen Schmidt, undergoing chemotherapy for five months, was the first patient to receive treatment on this serene terrace, made possible by a $2 million donation from the Conway and Sha family. The center, part of the new $1.3 billion UCI Health — Irvine medical complex, aims to provide advanced, patient-centered care in a comforting environment with views of the San Joaquin Marsh Reserve. This innovative facility embodies UCI Health’s commitment to enhancing patient well-being through cutting-edge care and compassionate surroundings.

In Southern California, July's hot and dry landscape is brightened by the California Fuchsia (Epilobium canum). This resilient plant, thriving from July to October, is one of the few native species that bloom in the summer. Its bright scarlet, trumpet-shaped flowers and grey-green foliage stand out, growing up to three feet tall. The California Fuchsia, a vital nectar source for hummingbirds, is also essential for drought tolerance and erosion control. UC Irvine Strengthens Roster with Top Guard Myles Che, Fresh Off Impressive Season

UC Irvine men's basketball welcomes guard Myles Che to their team. After one season at Chattanooga, where he averaged 7.5 points per game and posted a 52.7% shooting rate, Che returns to his home state. Notably, he scored double figures seven times, including a season-high 22 points against Louisville. Che's freshman stats include 211 points, 66 rebounds, 54 assists, and 18 steals. Head coach Russell Turner praised Che as a top guard target and a natural fit for the team, highlighting his intelligence, competitiveness, and passing talent. Che follows his brother Owen, a recent UC Irvine graduate, and joins Kyle Evans in the incoming class. The Anteaters ended the 2023-24 season with a 24-10 record, defending their Big West regular season championship title.

Irvine Valley's David Ogunlade Commits to NAIA Hastings College

Irvine Valley sophomore point guard David Ogunlade has committed to NAIA Hastings College in Nebraska. Ogunlade, named Irvine Valley's most improved player, helped the Lasers achieve a 17-12 overall record and reach the So. Cal. Regional Playoffs. As a top performer in the 2023-24 season, he averaged 5.8 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 3.1 assists per game, excelling as a perimeter defender. Ogunlade scored a season-high 17 points in a comeback win over Cerritos. He joins a strong Hastings program that finished 23-9 last season, won the Great Plains Athletic Conference Tournament, and participated in the NAIA Men's Basketball Tournament.

Irvine Police Arrest Two with Outstanding Warrants and Illegal Items

While patrolling a local storage facility's parking lot, IPD officers encountered Adam Russell Baughman and Marijean Ida Kleinschmidt, 43, from Costa Mesa. They had outstanding felony warrants, and a search of their car revealed meth, heroin, a loaded handgun, and ammunition. Both were arrested and booked into Orange County Jail on multiple felony charges.
