Fire Destroys Iconic WWII-Era Hangar in Tustin, Community Mourns Historic Loss

The historic 17-story north hangar at the former Marine Corps Air Station Tustin, built in 1942 and a significant part of local history, was lost today. It was one of the largest wooden structures and served in WWII to house blimps for coastal patrols and later helicopters. Listed as a National Historic Place in 1975, its destruction is mourned by the community, and gratitude is extended to the Orange County Fire Authority for their safety efforts.

Veterans Day at UCI: A Morning of Honor at the Flagpoles

The 2023 Veterans Day Ceremony at UCI will be on Nov. 8, 9-10 a.m. at the UCI Flagpoles, to honor U.S. Armed Forces veterans. Hosted by UCI Veteran Services Center.

Orange County Welcomes Exclusive Cancer-Fighting Hospital: Opening Set for 2025

City of Hope’s new six-story cancer hospital in Orange County, with its final beam now in place, is scheduled to open in 2025. This 73-bed hospital will be the county’s sole facility dedicated entirely to cancer treatment and cure, complementing an outpatient center that opened previously. It's part of a $1 billion campus expansion, marking the organization's second major campus after its Duarte headquarters.

From Quail Hill to the Ocean: Irvine’s Southern Preserve Bridges City and Sea

Irvine's Southern Preserve is a 16-mile stretch from Quail Hill to the Pacific Ocean, featuring unique flora and fauna. It offers popular trails in Bommer Canyon, Quail Hill, and Shady Canyon for hiking and biking across its 15,000 acres, linking Irvine to Crystal Cove State Park.

Native Seed Farm Invites Volunteers for Habitat Restoration Activities in November

The Native Seed Farm in Irvine offers community activities for nature conservation during fall and winter. Managed by Irvine Ranch Conservancy and partners, the 14-acre farm produces seeds for local habitat restoration. Volunteers can join without prior experience to help with seed harvesting and other tasks. Upcoming events are on the following dates in November:

  • Saturday, November 18th

  • ​Wednesday, November 29

Unlock the Great Outdoors: Bommer Canyon's Upcoming Activities and Hikes

Bommer Canyon offers a variety of outdoor activities organized by numerous groups and volunteers, with most programs being free of charge. Pre-registration is required for events led by IRC-Certified Volunteers, closing at 4 p.m. the day before the event. Minors must be accompanied by an adult, and for any assistance, reach out via email to [email protected].

Upcoming events:

  • November 13th: Challenging 11-mile Super Trek

  • November 14th: 9-mile hike through Bommer and Shady Canyons

  • November 15th: Mid-week 10-12 mile hike

  • November 17th: Plant identification hike with a focus on local flora

  • November 17th: 3.5-mile hike combined with a gentle yoga session

  • November 18th: Self-guided access to the Irvine Open Space Preserve trails

  • November 25th: Full moon hike

  • November 27th: Full moon hike

  • November 30th: 7-mile hike in Bommer Canyon

Emilie Castagna has been named MVP of the Big West Women's Soccer Championships.

UC Irvine Men's Water Polo to Celebrate Senior Night, Eyes Victory in Season Finale Against Pepperdine

UC Irvine's water polo team, ranked 6th, will celebrate senior night against Concordia Irvine on Nov. 8 and end the regular season at Pepperdine on Nov. 11. They've achieved their highest season ranking and first winning season since 2017, along with their first regular-season title since 2000. They recently suffered their first road loss to UCLA but secured a win against Cal State Fullerton. Six seniors will be honored post-match on Wednesday. The team has a history of success against Pepperdine, winning all three encounters last season. Key players have made significant contributions, including Ethan Shipman and Johann Thrall with four goals each against CSUF, and Jacob Pyle with impressive defensive stats. Tyler Padua leads the league in field blocks, while Pyle boasts the best save percentage and goals against average in conference games.

Sophomore Audrey Fowler Named Irvine Valley's Athlete of the Week for Stellar Volleyball Performance

Audrey Fowler, a sophomore libero from Irvine Valley's women's volleyball team, was named athlete of the week after her performance with 13 digs in a clean sweep against Fullerton. Her efforts have contributed to Irvine Valley's impressive 17-3 season record and 11-2 in the conference, where they are currently ranked 8th in the state. Fowler leads the conference in digs, consistently performing in every match, and will play in a significant upcoming match against Orange Coast.
