UCI Health Expert Offers Advice Amid Summer Foodborne Illness Outbreaks

With several foodborne illness outbreaks reported this summer, UCI Health infectious disease expert Dr. Shruti Gohil is encouraging people to take a few simple precautions when eating at home or dining out. To reduce the risk of illness, make sure meat and other animal proteins are thoroughly cooked, consider cooking or ordering meat well done, choose pasteurized eggs in sauces and dressings, avoid lukewarm buffet foods, and speak up if food appears spoiled or unsafe. If something doesn’t look or seem right, it may be best to avoid eating it.

High Heat on the Trails: What Hikers Should Know

Hot weather can make hiking and outdoor activities more challenging. Here are some tips for when the weather is particularly hot.
Go during cooler hours: Head out early in the morning or near dusk and avoid peak heat.
Choose cooler locations: Coastal or shaded areas may be more comfortable than hotter inland trails.
Bring plenty of water: Plan for at least one liter per hour of activity, and consider electrolytes.
Dress for the heat: Wear lightweight, breathable clothing, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunscreen.
Know the warning signs: Dizziness, headache, nausea, heavy sweating, or confusion can signal heat exhaustion. Stop, find shade, hydrate, and cool down.
Watch for wildlife: Snakes may be more active during hot weather. Stay on designated trails, watch your step, and give wildlife plenty of space.
Protect the land: Avoid unnecessary off-trail activity, especially during extreme heat, when plants and wildlife are already under stress.
