Expert Tips on Starting Your Landscape Transformation: Insights from Jonathan Stalvey

Transforming your landscape can be a daunting task, but with the right guidance, it can become an exciting and rewarding project. IRWD sat down with Jonathan Stalvey, Design Principal at TerraWorks Studio, in their quarterly gardening newsletter, The Dirt, to gather expert advice on how to kickstart your landscape transformation and ensure your design is both practical and beautiful. Here are his top tips to help you get started.
He advises to starting landscape transformations by making initial marks and generating ideas, using simple design elements that are functional and suitable for their environment.
He also emphasizes the importance of keeping designs simple and practical, like placing bioswales where they can actually collect water and planning planted areas based on sunlight and growth space.

In Face of Economic Struggles, California Legislators Push Through Major Tax Increases

California's Legislature and governor approved over $10.4 billion in higher taxes and fees amidst a $27.6 billion budget deficit. During the early months of 2024, they considered further tax increases, including a significant business tax hike. These measures come as California faces the highest unemployment rate in the U.S., raising concerns about affordability and employment costs.
Wealth Drain: California's Outmigration Crisis Costs State $24 Billion

IRS data reveals California lost $24 billion in personal incomes due to outmigration in 2021 and 2022, with 144,203 tax filers leaving, typically wealthier and with more dependents than those arriving. The state is seeing a shift from higher to lower income residents, impacting future tax revenues. Additionally, 304 companies have moved out since 2019. Despite a slight population growth, California is experiencing a job market shift, losing 154,000 private sector jobs while gaining 361,000 public sector jobs since September 2022.
THE FACTS
The California business exodus precedes the pandemic, as 65,273 businesses left the state between 1990 and 2019.
At the end of the first quarter of 2023, housing costs in California were more than 110 percent higher than those in the Nation as a whole.
California lost 352 headquarters from January 1, 2018, through December 31, 2021, including 11 Fortune 1000 companies.
The loss of corporate headquarters has only accelerated, with twice as many departures in 2021 as in 2020.
The stateβs loss of population has increased exponentially. In 2012, the state lost 34,000 residents, but in 2021, that number was 277,000.
The Tax Foundationβs 2024 State Business Tax Climate Index ranked California as 48th among the states for business friendliness (ahead of only New Jersey and New York).
