Irvine Leverages AI During Emergency Preparedness Month to Boost Flood Response

September is National Preparedness Month, and the City of Irvine is dedicated to year-round emergency management. Recently, the City's Emergency Operations Management team used artificial intelligence (AI) during a flood simulation exercise. AI helped predict evacuation routes and estimate how many residents could be safely transported under unpredictable conditions in real-time. Learn more about Irvine's innovative approach to emergency preparedness in the latest issue of Inside Irvine at cityofirvine.org/insideirvine.

Fall Prevention Tips for Older Adults: Simple Steps to Stay Safe at Home

Falls are the leading cause of injuries among older adults, with one treated in the ER every 11 seconds.

  • To reduce risk: have regular eye check-ups, eat healthy meals, exercise to improve strength and balance, and remove tripping hazards at home.

  • Key safety tips include staying hydrated, understanding medication side effects, wearing sturdy shoes, and considering a fall detection device if living alone.

  • In high-risk areas like bathrooms, install grab bars and use non-slip surfaces. In kitchens, keep frequently used items within easy reach, and for walking areas, clear clutter and use non-slip rugs and stair treads.

  • Ensure proper lighting, especially at night, and explore more fall prevention resources at ocfa.org or by calling (714) 573-6200.
